While we wait for battlestations, I thought I'd see if there are other recruits headed to Sub School in Groton? My son said there were about 8 in his division (I think) and I'm wondering who here has a recruit headed to Sub school.

Hey there, Cindy -
I think I posted to you on the sub moms group awhile back, but I feel a sense of continuity knowing our guys will be going together, and we get to continue the journey together as well! Kelly is going for SECT or whatever it is for submarine electronics. What about your son?

BTW, I'm glad for the diversion of your post. It was a bit intense feeling for the moms whose sons failed the run test.
My Fiance Dan is headed to Groton as well. Funny because he hates the cold weather! Like Marty's son Kelly, Dan is doing submarine electronics. And yea thanks for the diversion, I'm super nervous about Battle Stations.
Mine will be in the Sub computer electronics field also, he will be heading to Groton on the 16th.
I'm from Northern California and in my son's 20 years the only time he's been in snow is when we traveled to the mountains to see it. It's ironic that he's headed to CT just as winter gets started. I was talking with another mom in the area whose son was in Groton last year. She said he had a cold winter standing watch on base -- definitely going to be a change!

Sounds like the guys are all interested in the same field. My son's goal is "ET-Com" which is an electronics tech for the communication systems. He's pretty happy with all the options.

Have you all heard the news about the Navy adding females to subs? Sounds like some big changes in the works!
My older son was in Great lakes during the bad cold spell at the first of the year. We are from Oregon so used to rain and some cold..not freezing. He once said I can't wait to get back to the warmth of Oregon..haha. They had them on time limits for smoking, traveling etc because they did not want to risk the cold. Do not know if that was the sailors or those in charge making the rule, but he hated the cold. then he went to A school in Florida, and I had to remind him how much he wanted warmer weather...There he had a bad time with heat..

My worry is the traveling from A school to home for winter break, If Groton is worse than Great Lakes I am worried he will not make it home.

I am mixed on adding females to subs, I think they should have the right to be on subs if they want, at the same time I totaly understand why they were not to begin with...Will be interesting to see how it all works out.
Hi Deb this is Johanna Zacs Mom, The Great Lakes are alot colder. I am from Groton . It does get cold but not till January and Febuary. I was a little girl the last time we had a white christmas. In all Zacharys letter he complains how cold it is in the Great Lakes. Remember I said I will be checking the weather for the 16th, that is why . In Groton we are still walking around in short sleeve shirts and we live on the water. In Zachartys last letter he said he saw some snow flakes already at the Great Lakes. The boys will be fine.
That is good news, thanks!
Just found a new group for us, just joined it, after PIR it is going to be a lot of great info.

Groton Sub School and A School
Ha-ha, Deb. Beat ya! (Just kidding!) Megan and I have been on the Groton site for awhile now. I've seen posts about housing for those whose spouses may move there. Mara, nice to see you here, too. Groton will be a big change for all our guys, although I think you're from Lubbock, aren't you, Mara? Plenty of snow there. We MIGHT get several snows per year here in Wichita, but the biggest in the past few years was about 8 inches. These guys will have plenty of cold to keep them awake!
LOL, I can be a bit of a dunce. For a long time now when you all mentioned Groton I did not respond because my son was going to A school for Subs in CT. Then one day I saw on of you post about Subs in Groton CT and it hit me...oh that is where jacob is going!
My husband did 12 years on Submarines in Groton! I lived most of my life there. My son is now graduating from BC 10/16. I have to tell you that being on subs is totally different. The community is very close! Mom's your kids will be well looked after. My son can't do subs as he is 6'4"... LOL He wanted to, but then he decided to go into IT. I'm sure that surface ships are great as well! Have a great weekend!
Deb - your son is coming home on winter break? Doesn't it count as leave time? Megan may move to Kelly's school site and I think he wanted to save his leave time for the move, but it sure would be nice if he were home for Christmas.

While I'm sitting here at my computer and see the "upload files" below this text box, I'm going to upload a picture of Kelly and Megan's 9 month old son. This is what he's been missing the most!
