AMEN, ellen and Jodi! It does get better, ladies, so hang in there!
Good Morning!
I got the "I'm still alive" at 3 weeks and the "I'm a sailor" call after battlestations. His division had battlestations the week before PIR and he was able to call almost every day after that. His division did really well so maybe that is why he was allowed to call so often but he ran out of minutes on his phone card so he didn't call us once he got to "A" school. That is why I suggest you make sure your SR has a phone card with lots of minutes on it so that if he gets the opportunity to call, he will have a card to use. My son said each time he called it ate up at least 10 minutes on his card.
I was going to answer a question that was posted in a discussion group, but I see it has been asked here too so I shall post the answer here. :)
Phone calls are never a guarantee. The usual calls are the "I am here" call, the "I am still alive" call, that may come at approx three weeks, and the "I am a Sailor" call that comes after BS. There may be additional earned calls, but even those are never guaranteed and can be "lost" for a number of reasons.
There may also be information calls that come for security clearance, those can come at anytime. If you did receive a call for additional information they will call back if you missed the call.
Best advice is look forward to a call at any time, so keep your phone close, but never expect a call. When you do get a call be grateful for the time you get, many minutes or just a couple.
It's tough to not hear from them, I understand completely. I got one 2 1/2 minute call about half way through and not another until after BS which for me was three days before PIR.
So hugs to you all, and hang in there, remember "no news is good news".
America - No one knows for sure. However, we do know that they are given the opportunity after BS. I know that doesn't help much. We are all in the same boat waiting and wondering. Sorry.
LRNavyMOM, I am glad you found this site too!!! Glad you heard from your SR...
Thank you soupercook. :)
My son called tonight and talked to my husband. The rest of us were at church and missed the call. He's now Div 367. Same ship which is nice as we already have the coin. I guess he about broke down several times so maybe it's better he was talking to dad anyway.
karens: I cried from the moment I set foot in the PIR Hall until I hugged my son. How embarrassing! Couldn't stop. The piks with him afterwards show no more eye makeup and swollen eyes! HA! But they were happy emotional tears!
I also remember that my older son wanted to get to WalMart and buy his sailor brother his favorite candy to have at in the hotel room for him. Even being a macho man (25 at the time), he also cried through the ceremony. I think that we were both missing my hubby/their dad (died in 2001) who would have been so proud of his new sailor....sniff...
I got a phone call today too! It was short and sweet but I got to hear his voice!! He misses us and he sounds wonderful ! I am one happy mama right now......
LRNavyMom, welcome and we are glad you found this group as well.
It is so exciting to see some phone calls coming in. Hopefully more of those tomorrow :-)
