OK...I'll probably get grief...I'm sorry, but it't not right that they hold back mail. I understand that someone has to volunteer, but let me tell you--our recruiter makes it a BIG POINT to tell everyone coming in the door, "DO NOT VOLUNTEER FOR ANYTHING"...I wonder how many others do that...and, let's be honest, there's a lot of young folks out there that are simply not going to do anything more than what they absolutely have to. I am thinking that these kids (and the majority ARE kids) are having a tough enough time...do they really have to hold mail that is coming from home?  Maybe THAT is the encouragement these kids need to step up and take charge of what has to be done.  OK...please remember, I am simply stating my opinion and would greatly appreciate not having my head handed to me.

I agree srmom..... I feel like I am just floating!

Shelley - my son said in his letter that he did not get any of my mail until the 7th (he arrived on the 21st). I think the postal officer for the division has to pass a test before any mail is sent or received.

I also got the 10 minute call flbb! 12/003! He sounded strong and positive. Also mentioned that it seems to be a strong division. You know it will be so good to hear their voice, but gosh I feel like I won the lottery!

Has anyone who has a loved one in Ship 12 Division 004 gotten a call yet?  We got our first letter yesterday and my son said that they are holding their mail so he hadn't gotten any of the letters I've been sending yet. This was as of the 9th.  He sounded very down in the letter we received and I'm so disappointed that he isn't getting any communication for the "outside world" at all.  I've written every day to encourage him and tell him how proud we are and how much we love him but they aren't giving his division mail.  I've been hoping for a call just to hear his voice. Does anyone else have any information about Ship 12 Division 004???

Div 003 calling. 10 min call, so happy to hear from him! To all the Div 003 parents out there he said they are doing well and are ahead on several things as a group. What a great day!

Wow FTLW, thanks for all that information. You sure know your stuff :o)

They are all Sailors. That is what they are. BUT when addressing them you use their rate....which is also their pay grade.

In boot they are "Seaman Recruit". All are paid at the rate of E-1...Seaman Recruit. Even if they earn E-2 or E-3. That pay will be given to them retroactively. "E" is for "enlisted".

After Graduation:

E-1 is a Seaman Recruit or SR...Yes even after grad they are still a "recruit”.

E-2 is a Seaman Apprentice or SA

E-3 is a Seaman or SN.

Now, this also depends on their group.

There is:

Hospitalman - HR, HA, HN

Dentalman - DR, DA, DN

(I have not heard the above two used a lot but they were on the sites below- 2009 being the most recent that I could find)

Constructionman - CR, CA, CN

Airman - AR, AA, AN

Fireman - FR, FA, FN

They can be referred to by their rate...Fireman Jones, Constructionman Apprentice Smith...or rating and rate - Boatswain's Mate Seaman Johnson, Culinary Specialist Seaman Recruit Johnson. I think if you don't know any specifics then it would be generic - Seaman Jones.

Here is a link to wikipedia about enlisted rates:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy_enlisted_rates

And just to make your head spin:

Here is some links from www.navy.mil about differences between rates and ranks and sleeve insignia. Enlisted personnel have rates NOT ranks.

http://www.navy.mil/navydata/ranks/rankrate.html

Rate Insignia

Color coded Rate Marks

Enlisted Rating Insignia  - For this one...just click the different ratings...they will take you to the pages with the specific insignia.

Congrats to everyone on getting your first real letters! I got my first real one last week, and three more today. He has completely surprised me...never thought he'd write so much. Hopefully there will be more phone calls this weekend!

Wanda, SR's are Seaman Recruit's so maybe that's what you were thinking of.
