Melissa,

My son is attending A school in G.L. as well. I know they have to move over after graduation. Ive heard it could be up to 5hrs but after that they can be with us until 8:30 Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We are flying in Thursday and staying until late Sunday night. Not sure of their responsibilities on Sat. & Sun. hope it help =)

Since my son will be staying in Chicago for A school after PIR will I be able to spend extra time with him that weekend?  Anyone have a clue?  I am trying to decide if we should fly back home Sunday Morning or Night.  No need to stick around if I can't see my boy.

kim: Personally, we stayed at Residence and really liked it.  They are pet friendly too!  But CatMom stayed at Holiday Inn Express and liked that alot, ellen stayed at Navy Lodge and recommended that, and friends of mine stayed at Courtyard and Springhill and recommended those as well!  So....you can't go wrong!  I believe that Holiday Inn Express and Courtyard have indoor pools, if that makes a difference to you!

I got call from my SR, he's in Ship 12 Div 015.  He said his division and brother division are a push and also a pilot division. They are just beginning training so they will be busy. The pilot division he explained meant they were wearing tennis shoes until swim test.  He sounded good, he called because he needed information for his clearance. He said everyone has had some form of the ricky crud and he was so happy not to pass out when he got his shots and blood drawn. I tried to ask as many questions as I could so I could pass on information.  I told him about all the SR's I knew in his division and brother division and he's like, JEEZ MOM! LOL  But he sounds good and he thinks they will call this weekend.  Fingers crossed for everyone else! I can't believe how much my spirit has buoyed. I didn't even think I was moping before. LOL  The girls at work were overjoyed for me too.

I agree with CryptoDad!  My son actually was delayed a week in training when he was there. However, I never ever talked to him about that being a possibility (he was delayed during Training Week 3 out of 6).  Sadly, I didn't know about Southwest Airlines back in 2009 so had booked on another major carrier, so I had to pay 2 change fees.  CryptoDad's advice to book with Southwest is a very good one.  Not only is there no change fee, 2 bags check for free!  They fly into Milwaukee WI (45 min to GL, no traffic, cheaper car rental) and Chicago-Midway (hour+ to GL, depending on traffic).

As far as hotels, if you book directly with the hotel (i.e., not through an online discount travel service).....there is no problem if you have to cancel.  You can usually do this up to the day before or day of arrival.

Recommended hotels:

Navy Lodge (book in SR's name if you do not have your own military ID), about one mile from base, good rates, shuttle service for $2/roundtrip, leaving at 4 different times on PIR morning.

Springhill Suites, Residence Inn, Courtyard, Holiday Inn Express....all about 4-5 miles from RTC....you can use Sarge's shuttle service from these hotels or the local service for PIR , all the same price.  Call now and ask for the Navy Graduation discount.....they hold a certain number of rooms at this rate, but they go fast!
