Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Comment by SplashMom on October 10, 2013 at 8:22pm: Hi! Our son will be staying in the GL's...anyone elses? We will be staying there Tuesday thru that Sunday. We have four in our group, and so my son's gf will have to sit out! Bummer, but the good thing is we should have more time with him altogether. ;) Still haven't booked a place to stay...can't decide!! Any suggestions?

Wow, we're starting to feel that way, my daughter is also talking about joining the service

Comment by ellen0502 on October 10, 2013 at 6:22pm: Mel3, If your SR is staying in GL for A School they should have liberty everyday through Sunday. Wednesday will be a "split" day as you will have a short time with them after PIR before they have to go back to their ship to move over to the TSC side. This will take several hours and they will call you when they can leave for the rest of the day. They do have to be back at their ship in the evening between 8-10pm, they will have been briefed on the time.

They should have the rest of the days through Sunday from approx 6am to 10pm, again they will know when they can leave in the morning (usually a phone call) and when they must be back each night. They cannot be late to their ship at night, if they are they can lose all remaining liberty.

They will be briefed on everything they can and cannot do while on liberty. No drinking, no smoking, no travel more than 50 miles from base, no PDA etc. They may also pull watch at some point which may take away some of their liberty time.

Comment by Tina on October 10, 2013 at 6:09pm: Mel3 - just saw the rest of your question..sorry - YES! other family can still visit with them once they are on Liberty...I believe they will have a curfew to return to their ships..as far as exactly how things will go for Turkey Day, no clue. But I made reservations through Saturday!Hoping they'll have that day as Liberty too!!
My son is flying to Pensacola, so he'll be leaving either Friday or Saturday...I say either b/c Friday is a Military Family Day (free vacation day) so most bases are on "liberty" for that day, not sure how that works out for PCSing to a training school....anyone?
