They are beautiful Lala Ribbon Queen, much better in person.

You would think they would clean out the ducts to try and keep the recruits from getting sick.

I will keep everyone in my prayers. I am doing a lot of that since yesterday. One of my aunts has a fungus growing in her lungs and spreading and they think she might have cancer.

She goes for a MRI and heart test next Friday to see if she is strong enough for the surgery. We have heart disease in our family, it took my uncle a year and a half ago. If you keep pray for her I would appreciate it. No one knows in my family except my aunt that is helping her , myself and my husband. She does not want to tell anyone and get people upset before Christmas.

Lynn, how is your son? Will he be able to complete PIR 12/22? My son was sick 2 1/2 wks after he got there. He had to get a penicillin (peanut butter) shot that didn't take affect for a wk. He went back twice. He almost had pneumonia the dr said. This time he said it seems to have targeted their ship. He said there were many still very ill. I hope your son is able to grad & didn't lose to many days. I didn't understand the first part if your comment. I think you may have said my name was funny, I hope you don't think I feel this illness thing is @ all funny. We were worried as well that if he gets too sick it could delay hid grad. A horrible setback. It upsets me that they are aware of the problem & how it spreads but can't address preventing it since they're obviously aware as it's happened before. Sounds like a regular annual thing. Hmmm.... I hope your son gets well soon. I'll keep him in my prayers. Guess a prayer for them all is in order. Thanks for your reply & info. Hopefully more specific info will come out soon.

You its funny worry wart...my son got pneumonia at boot camp which 1 more could tell you was not funny because it happened at the end and yikes it was ugly...any how...what the doctors explained to him as he laid in the hospital bed getting fluids and antibiotics...unbeknownst to his mama...is that they spread it around because their training is all done inside.  Now intially I was like all you do is clean..however he said the doctors said it has to do with the ventilation system...the vents don't get cleaned so when the air conditioning or heat pops on...the germs and junk are blown out on the recruits and the crud is passed along...they rarely open windows...they spend like 90% of their time indoors and it is just a haven for illness...lovely huh...

In regard to battlestations I have checked with every seasoned mom I know ( there's a lot of them) and no one has ever heard of battlestations being done on a Friday night...but the 12/17 group also thinks that one of their divisions has bs tonight...so I guess tomorrow I will have a better idea...now sometimes recruits get the day bs starts mixed up with the day of the capping ceremony or the day it ends...which would mean they would start battlestations Thursday evening which is typical...so we will just have to wait and see.  The only other explanation is that for some reason they aren't doing Captain's Cup...but this is like a big highlight of boot camp...so I don't know.  We just wait at this point.  Hopefully more of you will get letters and additional information will come and I will let you know what I find out tomorrow.

Hi Worry Wart, I like you name lol, If I had thought of it a few months ago it may not have been available for you haha. I hate how these young men and women all seem to get sick. Even when my sailor was there this summer they were all getting sick. I think when you get that many people together from so many different places they are bombarded with germs and bugs. I hope and pray they are all feeling better very soon.I am glad your soon to be sailor is already feeling better and that he is so excited about his accomplishments. He should be, that is quite an honor.

Proudmom, I am so glad you like the ribbons. I was beginning to worry because I knew how many I shipped early this week. They really do look much better in person. Right?

Hi Laka Ribbon Queen. My son called today. Ship 02 DIV 906. He said their DIV had photos today and.......he also said he passed marksmanship as a "sharp shooter". !!!! He is getting his ribbons :) He said only 2 SR's (including himself) in his DIV received that honor. I am soo proud. I could hear the excitement in his voice. His DIV has been hit with some sort of flu bug. He said many SR's he had fevers, coughing & some were still pretty ill. He was feeling better & says he's counting down the days. (12 more to go). going to push through. This is the 2nd time he's been ill. (Must be because he's from sunny CA. Our family has never experienced the kind of weather in IL ....I font know how this bug picked them, but I pray they all get well & strong soon. :))

Does everyone have their blue candles for Battle Stations?

Here is a post from PIR 11/05 explaining the significance of burning the blue candles.

Comment by Lynne on October 29, 2010 at 11:59am

The Significance of the Blue Candle

In times past, when communication with loved ones who were away on a long trip was slow to non-existent, a candle left burning in the window became a symbol to the traveler that the loved ones at home eagerly awaited the return of the traveling member. When the trip involved going off to war, a mother or wife would often place a lighted candle in the front window and, as she kissed her son or husband good-by, would point to the candle and remind him that she would keep it burning until their return.

For the navy the symbol has become the blue candle. We burn them during battlestations, holidays and special occasions when our loved ones are deployed and other times as necessary like when they are in battle. It brings comfort to the sailor and to the family! Hope this helps you understand about the blue candles.

Lala Ribbon Queen- I got my ribbons yesterday. I loved them thank you so much. My son laughed when I told him I got a ribbon.

My son said his div was doing BS on Thursday night next week.

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on December 10, 2010 at 7:54pm

I can't be absolutely sure, you never can with the navy because things can and do sometimes change. But I have never heard of them having battle stations on a Friday night. The captains cup is on Saturday and that is a fun filled day that they all enjoy and look forward to. Sometimes a group will go on Thursday night the week before PIR because it give those who have PIR that week a chance to go through it again if they failed. Since there was no PIR today I don't know if any groups had BS last night. Now if for some reason there is no Captains cup tomorrow then I guess some be having BS tonight. Try not to worry, I know it is hard but from what I have heard it is not as bad as we "Moms" think it is. The calls don't usually start coming in until 2pm Central time so depending on where you live you can figure out about what time to expect the calls. We are on the East coast and ours came at about 6 pm.

Comment by Valerie (Brittany's Mom) on December 10, 2010 at 7:18pm

Sacred's Mom,

Captain's Cup is like a field day. The Saturday before PIR, all of the recruits get to compete with each other and within their division, at things like: situps, pushups, running and possibly tug-o-war. They are not graded, and there is no pass or fail, it is just for fun; and then the winning division gets bragging rights and a flag to carry at PIR. That's why I was wondering about BS for div 027 being on the 17th, because if they are up all night, they won't be able to compete. Lynne???
