npsailormom....recruits make different decisions...some choose to use only the five days they have earned for leave, so choose not to use their leave at all so they can have more time after A-school, and some choose to use more than their five days and essentially go "in the hole" and owe the navy days back. They earn 2.5 days of leave each month. Every sailor has to make their own decision. My son is taking his five days and then was given the ability to get RAP which means he will be working at the Recrutiing Office for five days so he was able to extend his leave to 10 days...he did not want to go in the hole...

One thing I have really learned listening to my son is that they have class after class about being responsible about your money, your time-off etc...and they talk about how these decisions can impact you...and when I asked him why he didn't just go in the hole for a couple days (okay give me a break I'm a mom and I miss him...lol) he said...if I get sick, if there is a family emergency, or something awful happens and I get seperated it will wreak havoc with my pay mom...now how can i argue with that mature decision...so each recruit or sailor has to make that decision on their own.

Proudmom it is hard to see them for just a few days and then turn around and say goodbye again...but it is also true that communication is much better. For me, and I would say for the vast majority of those in my PIR group our recruits were so communication starved that we all have enjoyed talking, texting, and having facebook communications with our sailors. My son has been known to call me three times in one day just to chat...not for long period of time...but just to say hi, just because he can. One thing to know is he also hangs up on a dime if an officer walks in his room, there is a fire drill, some kind of an announcement he has to listen to or a variety of other things so you have to get used to sudden silence...but once you get over that...the communication is great...lol

Has anyone else's recruit decided not to take their leave and go straight to their A school in Pensacola the day after PIR. Is that the same everyone else is getting?

Megan: from what my husband told me, he's making his arrangements home from BC as well as from home to A school while he's in BC. If your hubby isn't able to make arrangements from home to A school while there, then he can do so at home (meaning he can fly). Hope that helps.

Does anyone know if our future sailors make their arrangements for transportation to A School while they are at basic? My husband has decided not to report to A School until Jan 4th. Can I drive him or does he have to fly? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

LIS: In BattleStations, they go through in smaller groups within their division (with their brother division), but are evaluated individually on many things...including working as a team. Go to the discussion group above on Battlestations and read the article from the Navy Times. I posted the link on there.

I got a letter yesterday, they are, working with a 9mm pistol, then they do live fire where they can get a ribbon if they shoot good....

Proudmom...I know what you mean about coming home and then ship him. But they way I look it is and encourage your husband too....eventually they can have cell and laptop and (like I'm planning to do) you can send a text everyday just saying "Good morning, how are you have a nice day, Love Mom and Dad" and they can answer back and so on.....I think is going to be a little bit more easy. A lot of time what desperate us is not to be willing to know how are they doing. But as now.....24 more day for Dec. 22. Yay!!!!

It seems like time has flown by. I am doing better with him being gone and my husband is doing worse. I wish I knew how to help him, but onl time and PIR will help. It will be hard to see him and then turn around a few days later and ship him off again. I will cherish our days together.
