the reason I asked about the letter is our recruiter said do not make your reservations until you get the 4 week letter with instructions saying he is set to graduate. But if yall have never heard of that then I guess I will just go and ahead and make them. I have the hotel already.

I just received a letter from my son containing the adopt-a-sailor form/information.

1) Recruits can be adopted by a "host" immediate family member (mother, father, sister, brother, uncle, auntgrandmother, grandfather, spouse, and cousin).
2) You may adopt your recruit plus one other (same sex)
3) Recruits must remain within 50mi radius of RTC
4) All persons accompanying the "host" for pick-up must be listed on the form

Thanks so much, Marion, for clarifying the Adopt a Sailor program. It is good to know that they maybe can spend Thanksgiving with a family before graduation. That was the part I was unclear on. Thanks!

QT4JL, I posted a question to the RTC facebook page & this was their response:

"Not every recruit will be eligible for Adopt a Sailor. It depends on how far along they are in their training. Those recruits who are eligible will be have the opportunity to send home paperwork to fill out. For those who are eligible whose family cannot make it to Great Lakes, or if the recruit decides not to send home the paperwork, will be adopted out in large groups to area civic organizations."

I believe they can only be "adopted" by immediate family, but I expect to receive a letter from my son today w/the "adopt a sailor" info.

Just a bonus, ladies....the physical shape that your recruits are in when you see them at PIR is remarkable! My son never looked better. He has put on just a few pounds since then (but he still looks good!), but he told me NO one looks as good as they look after boot camp! I think he may be right because they sure are in phenomenal shape!

QT4JL: On being allowed liberty for Thanksgiving with a family/friend, I'm not sure if the Adopt a Recruit program is applicable before they have graduated boot camp or not? If it is, then your recruit will have to get a paper to sign and mail it to the people picking him up (they have to bring it with them). But I suggest you call the Public Affairs Office and ask about that: 847-688-2405 I know some in the 11/24 group are doing it, but their recruits will have graduated the day before. Please let me know what you find out so I know how to advise others. Thanks!

Hey everyone,

Sarah has received 2 letters today! So, I'm patiently waiting for 2 pm to get here..that's when my mail comes...and am hoping I have a nice long letter as welll!! Only 30 more days....the good stuff starts now girls! Sarah said Michael said he's gettng better at his stuff and much stronger and leaner now, knows his division is gong to kick butt during Hell week! The confidence is starting to show now!!!!

chanmomship: What letter are you talking about? There is nothing sent saying they will graduate once you have received the original form letter with their PIR date and ship/div info. You will just get the I'm a Sailor call after BStations, but that is within the week of PIR so you can't wait that long! HA! So, yes, make your airline reservations. Refundable tickets are VERY expensive...it is really better to check the "change" fees for the airlines and go with nonrefundable tickets. But I wouldn't wait...we did have to change ours when my son graduated...moved back a week...but it ended up just costing us $89 extra for each ticket (2) because the price of the flights went down for that weekend....go figure! But that was fine...the change fee for American was $150, but with the cheaper flights, it came out to $89.

chanmom - my flight and hotel tickets are already booked. I have faith! LOL

QT-they have to have some sort of paperwork filled out for the *adopt a recruit*. Not sure what is all about but dianne knows! :)
