Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Comment by diannep on December 3, 2015 at 3:53pm: Yes, they can sound mechanical....they are told everything to do and think during Bootcamp so it comes natural for some of them to sound robotic. He may have been afraid that the powers that be may read his letters to you (they don't) and worried about putting in any mushy words. Hope the next letter is a little more personable!

Comment by Beachmomblue on December 3, 2015 at 1:57pm: I received a letter today. He sounds so mechanical. Is that normal? No love you. But sounds like is doing okay and very popular and helping other recruits alot. He said they were getting punished and he stepped in and did the push ups with them and the petty officer said they can stop because of it. He said everyone knows him even without looking for his name of the sleeve. He doesn't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Wished his letter was more personal but I'm glad to hear from him.

Comment by diannep on December 2, 2015 at 8:31am: texasmom: They are not allowed to receive care pkgs so please don't send one! Someone did that to my son when he was there over Christmas in 2009. We still don't know who sent it as there was no card and it came directly from a vendor. He was grilled by his RDCs on who sent it and of course he had no idea. It was full of Christmas candy that he saw his RDCs enjoying later in their office! So please resist the urge to send a care pkg. The only exception is that RTC offers a PIR care pkg that can be purchased to send to your new sailor....for those families who will not be able to be there for PIR.

By the way, sending a card to your SR for Christmas is fine...and you can include a VISA gift card that he can use in the NEX or at the fast food restaurants on base when they can visit those.

Beachmomblue I'm in agreement with you as well this site is great only another military parent knows how your felling, my friends are great but they have No idea how it feels not just to pick up phone to call there son. My son left for boot camp Oct 18th looks like i will not get to give him BIG huge till he get home from A school. But I'm going to stay strong for him just another way i can be his Mom.

With Christmas coming up has anyone thought about sending care pkg to there SR? My son is is going to have a hard time he was hoping to come home. Nothing sweet beef jerker small presents cards exc.

We've never been apart on his birthday so today was tough. 21 years ago today my son was born.......21 years later he's training to be an elite....a Navy Sailor. I took comfort in that today. <3
