They are usually up for 36+ hours when they first get there. We believe this is their way of getting them all "in" the same time zone because they come from all over the place. By the time they go to sleep they are mentally and emotionally exhausted. But after those first 3 or 4 days they get on a schedule and they have lights out pretty early and they get plenty of time to sleep. Most of their training is indoors. They are usually outside very little and then it is to go from one building to another. They have all the proper clothing for very cold weather and even their faces are covered when they are outside.
For the Meet and Greet- The Ramada Inn has a Meet and Greet the night before every PIR. They do a great job and have have hot and cold snacks and it is free. You only have to pay for your drinks but we took our own bottled drinks in with us to save money. The Meet and Greet is for all Navy families who have a recruit graduating the next day. There will be some there who have never heard of N4M's (sad I know). Some groups decide to have a separate Meet and Greet but most go to the one at the Ramada and then maybe plan on going out to eat together somewhere close by with all their friends from N4M's. It is totally up to you as a group what you do. You will hear some horror stories about the Ramada Meet and Greet being a smoked filled bar and it is just not true. They don't allow smoking in there at all. It is help in a bar like setting and is a little dark but the this is a family event, everyone brings their kids, they have a mic that they will pass around and allow you all to introduce yourselves and talk a little bit about your sailor. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a great time when we were there.
NavyMaMa: I agree with Lala. That is cutting it close with your move. Even with the box...because even though Lala is right in that it normally arrives within a week, sometimes it may take a bit longer. And some get the form letter before the box...rare, but it does happen. So...I agree with her that you need to use another address...is there someone in the state you are moving to that you are friends with who will allow you to use THEIR address? Just to ensure that you receive both the box and the form letter?
Angie, Thanks for starting this group!
I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you over the next eight weeks! I thought I was prepared for this but sending my Hubby off & then getting the call was much more difficult than I anticipated! At least work is a distraction, I seem to have the hardest time during my drive home from work. Usually I will call him & we'll chat while I'm in the car & now, the closer I get to home the more the tears start to flow.
At least I've had some lol moments the last couple days too. My brother-in-law is an O6 and after I updated my hubby's status he asked if he should call & ask them to be nice to him. I'm sure Hubby will get a kick out of that (after he gets over the heart attack of thinking "I sure hope he wasn't serious")
