navywife (and everyone!)-Oops-shoulda mentioned that the "After PIR..." explains Grad n Go.

This term is trying to be phased out as it has caused confusion. The Navy now uses the terms: Friday and Saturday Departures.

But as you can see...you are the exception...as was I. You are a "Sunday Departure"...again as was I.

Grad n Go originally meant those going from RTC to NSGL (Naval Station Great Lakes) for "A" school...they graduated and saw their family for a short period after PIR and then transferred all their belongings over to NSGL. Takes 3-5 hours. So you have to make arrangements to go do something or go back to your hotel and wait for them to call.THEN they have the rest of PIR day to spend with Fam until they return at night( make sure they have a working phone card so they can call you to come back and pick them up). They then get the rest of the weekend for liberty (no overnights).Hence the term...Grad(uate) n Go(leaves immediatly for Base across the way.)

Then it bacame used or misused for those leaving the next day as they Grad(uated) n Go (go to the Airport the following morn between 1-2 AM to check in for the flight to their "A" school. Doesn't matter what time the flight is...the Navy only makes one trip...usually. LOL).

I was advised to book through until Sunday...and boy was it the BEST advice ever (Thank You dianne and LaLa!). We had a THURSDAY PIR as it was Memorial Day weekend and he was to leave on FRIDAY at 1 AM. He called on the Tuesday before PIR while I was flying to GL and told me of the changes.

Woo-Hoo for us...three days!! When I think what would have been...:-(. I just figured I'd make a vacation out of it if it stayed the way it was originally!

Luvmyboy  -  Where did you say you are staying? If we are at the same place we can stay up together. I'm at the Ramada. Are you going by yourself? I may have missed all of that conversation. Just let me know. Thanks & have a nice evening!

9 more days and counting down can't wait!!!!!

dianne explained it perfectly!

Bumping up the "After PIR" discussion up top. Has my personal experience with a Saturday Departure. ;-)

I am going to San Antonio Sep 7-12.  I've been to the Sea World there before and it isn't very pregnancy friendly.  It is mostly roller coasters and not much else.

J'sMom:  If your sailor is staying at GL for A School, you will get a hug and a brief visit after PIR and then those sailors will be moving over to A School base.  Not 100 percent sure if all GL sailors move over then or not (they keep changing!).  Then...after they settle in....3-5 hours....they use their phone card to call you to pick them up for liberty.  Must be back each night through the weekend at A School base.

If your sailor is flying out (Sat. Departure), you take your sailor with you after PIR.

Gates open at 6:30; PIR Hall at 7.  They won't let you line up earlier than that so no need to try and arrive before 6:30.  We arrived at 6:40 and by the time we went through security and walked over to the PIR hall, it was a few minutes after 7.

The Ramada shuttle is free...and it gets you right in.  Wish it didn't leave so late though. We took the shuttle from our hotel (Residence)...6:30 one....was perfect.  Only about 10 minutes for security and then on into the PIR hall.  But I understand your concerns with the Ramada's leaving so late...I don't know why they do that either.

Many have had very positive experiences driving.  You just have to be in that car line early.  10 divisions is an average size group...so it shouldn't be too bad.
