Just to let you know that it isn't standing in ranks for a long time that makes a sailor "fall out"...it is locking their knees which does something to the blood circulation. I have stood in ranks for hours and every seasoned sailor knows to slight bend your knees. It still happens sometimes and when in ranks one must be mindful of the possibility of catching another shipmate...it happens especially if it is stuffy....however, the RTC drill hall had AC. Also, a wise leader will put their ranks into "parade rest" which allows a person to slightly and discreetly shift body weight from one foot to the other. Just as trishar's husband also suggested.

Have not heard from my daughter, but her "A" school is located in GL-All corpsmen after graduation will have to go check in to "A" school before going on liberty is what she told me last week. Well it will give me a chance to check out some things on base. Angie-is there a "Goat Locker"?

Shannong--as having gone through this with my son, he said he was a Grad and Go...so we changed our itinerary. Unfortunately we found out the week of graduation that he was not going straight on to Pensacola because of a medical issue, but was instead going to THU(temporary holding unit) for a while. But, we could not redo our flights and sadly dropped him off at THU so we could catch our flight on Saturday. However, I would have NOT changed a thing. Attending Boot Camp graduation gives you such a greater perspective even if it is only for that day....it is a chance of a lifetime...Go if you can!

Sobe-- no apology necessary..believe me you know more whats going on than any of us so any info is good to me!!! I appreciate all the input you and JessicaB give us..
KristinaR-Im sending you a message but please dont be upset..I completely understand! If it wasnt for my husband working two jobs we couldnt go either. We are packing all of our food too cause there no way we'll be able to eat out the whole time.
BodySnatchers- My nephew had told me about those.
GIFTS- please understand I dont have any money to spare to get Zac anything although Im so proud of him I'd love to hand him the world. The money clip is something simple that I thought he could keep forever and actually had read it from someone elses story and thought thats a cool idea.
PIR- trust me I havent planned anything for our time with Zac..and that is so hard for me cause I am a planner..but I just told him we were at his mercy..he wrote me and told me that he wanted to "go out to eat and see chicago and show off his cool uniforms" that he "had been cooped up in the barracks and wanted to be out". Im a nervous wreck about time and what if we get stuck in traffic so the only planning I been doing is finding restaraunts and things close to base (thanks to JessicaB). All I want is to be near him.
I think everything will change for everybody once we are there and in the moment..Everyone knows their son/daughter the best.Really all we are doing are sharing ideas and I love that cause someone might mention something that makes it better for us. So keep the thoughts flowing ladies!!

oh. my. god. I spoke to soon. I went on YouTube...and typed in "Passing out during ceremony" and saw army, marines fainting during graduation.
I didn't realize PIR ceremony is 1 1/2 hrs long of standing for them!
What gets me is that I'm sure these marines in the video were warned of not locking their knees so this wouldn't happen. Unbelievable.
Comment by trisha on August 10, 2010 at 2:41pm
My husband told me to remind Casey to unlock his knees if he can, will help with the fainting and my husband said it happens more than you think.

BODY SNATCHERS? Okay...I'm guessing that no one has ever posted any fainting sailors on YouTube. Not that I really want to see that.....but I'm a worrier for the "embarrassment aspect of this situation. (so shoot me....I'm a worrier!) Sobe, can you sort of paint the picture for us here? Do sailors actually collapse on the floor, or are they caught before they hit the ground? What do the 'body snatchers' do with the sailor? Do they stand them back up to their feet in their same spot or do they take the poor sailor to a bench somewhere or what?....either way it is embarrassing for the poor sailor. I get it....it's a normal reaction to standing so long without a single movement...but really....what do they do with the poor sailor??? My heart goes out to these poor sailors who go through this in front of their families.

Thanks Sobe- and no forgiving necessary. You give us so much info that is helpful that an occassional slip is easily forgotten. I was figuring that mine would want input on the purchases anyway so they will be purchased and sent to him later.
KristinaR- I have sent you a message.

My personal thoughts on gifts: YOUR PRESENCE IS YOUR PRESENT!!!!! Your sailors are not expecting a gift, they just want your love and undivided attention (so don't plan every minute of your trip!). Now, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't give them something if it's in your heart and budget to do so, but please keep in mind that there is very little they can take back with them that evening. Even though they have graduated, they are still on boot camp grounds. So.... no cell phones, no laptops, no ipods. They can take back a wrist watch, money, debit/credit cards, phone cards, new wallet. I did see every parents buying new cell phones at Gurnee Mills Mall on the Friday at my son's PIR, but those were Grad & Go's whose parents were meeting them at the airport the next morning - which is when they handed their sailor the phone. But if they are on a chartered flight, you won't be able to do that.

Keep it simple, just spend time with them and that is the greatest gift you can give them. They just want to hug you, eat, rest and ..... talk your head off!
