Boxermom-that would work out so well for your family :-) Make sure that before you pick your son up from GL that he make sure his orders(for convalescent leave) are stamped POV(privately owned vehicle) that way he will be able to get his mileage back home paid for. However, knowing too well the Navy system, they might still make him travel via commercial travel. He just needs to ask when the time comes. Sorry for the typos(if there are any) I just was fitted for mono vision contact and am still getting used to them--but the Yeoman in me HATES to make typos :-)

Boxermom..look on the brightside...you dont have to pay for his dental work!!! I know that doesnt help much, but that stuff is expensive after deductibles and stuff, one of the new "perks" of being in the military!!! My SR told me the Navy pays for TWO plastic surgeries a year!!! OMG!!! I know what she's after!!!! Im sure he will get the best care possible, The Navy has already made an investment in him, they will make him good as new!

Hi boxermom-in regards to your son. After bootcamp your son will go to the Temporary Holding Unit (THU) and stay there before, during, and after surgery. I know this to be true because this was the procedure for my son who had sinus surgery four years ago after boot camp. He was able to come home for convalescent leave, however our son could not fly and had to take the train home to Texas. So, just fair warning, they might tell your son he cannot fly home for convalescent leave because of the eardrum issue, but yes he can take the train. Leave for this type of recovery is about two to three weeks, depending on the doctor. He will most likely have his surgery at the VA hospital located up there. We did not travel up to Great Lakes for Chris' surgery, but he was in capable hands. You may be able to be with your son, but he will have to stay at THU after the surgery (remember he is still in the Navy, and they are responsible for him) After recovery, your son will go on to "A" school. However, he needs to be in contact with the person who is in charge of the quota for the "A" school he will attend, quotas(seats available) fill up way in advance, and he will need to make sure he does not get lost in the system. What "A" school will he be going to? YNC

shannong-I went back a few pages and read where your daughter is already an E-3! She sounds like a smart cookie! My son is in aviation too. That your your daughter can receive a package of toiletries and stuff is still amazing to me. Her RDCs do sound decent and aren't on a "power trip" like I'm sure some are. My hubby (a sailor back in the early 80's) said his RDCs played "good cop- bad cop". Some were approachable and some weren't.
tnpromised- lol, My son used to sleep in 'til the 'crack of noon' too! I go by his room and at AMAZED at how clean it is everyday now that he is gone. lol I miss him a lot! But I don't miss the multiple wet towels on his bedroom floor. And I can actually vacuum in there and see the color of our carpet! lol
