I am posting this on several groups - please read:

There are several of us on various groups that are writing letters to recruits who haven't gotten mail (or rarely get mail). We do this several ways, #1 - we write a "dear recruit" letter and send it to someone we know and ask them to give it to someone who doesn't get letters. Sometimes we send 3 copies of that letter (typed and hand signed) if there's more than one person not getting mail. We include our name and address at the bottom, in case they want to write back - but we continue to mail the letters whether we hear from them or not. Of course, if a recruit were to write back telling us to stop, we would (has never happened yet). I can't tell you how rewarding it feels to do this - it's better than sponsoring a family at Christmas!!!! The letter should be motivating and inspirational, maybe ask them a few general questions and tell a little about yourself and your recruit/or experience, send some funny stuff too if that's your style. I tell my guys (all have been male so far) that I know bc is difficult and they can use me as a sounding board if they have issues. #2 - Now.... if we have a recruits name and address, we mail the letter directly to them.

So.... if your recruit has told you that they are people who don't get mail and you want someone to write a letter to some of these recruits, I'm happy to do so. I would need you to send me a private message on this site and provide me with your recruits name and address. I would write a quick note to your recruit asking him/her to pass out the letters. It's up to you, but I am here for those recruits! I cannot imagine what it would be like to not get any mail - my son lived for it, it's the only thing that kept him sane in bc! Ask your recruit in your next letter if there are recruits who are not receiving mail (not because it was held, because no one is writing them).

Here's some motel suggestions from a seasoned mom who has been to PIR twice!

The Candlewood Suites is about three miles from RTC and across the street from SuperWalmart. Full size kitchen stocked with all the plates cookware frig, micro, etc. for $74.00 a night.
The La Quinta Inn & Suites is down the street from the Gurnee Mall. (They all want to go there and walk around after lunch and PIR) It is about 15 minutes from RTC and you can walk to Outback, Olive Garden and Joe's Crab Shack from the hotel. Room there are $78.00. Both hotels are very nice for the $$$.

My son drew a picture of the hall and where he would be standing, that really helped. They practice about 3 weeks ahead of time, so I got the letter in plenty of time to fax it to the other moms in his division. It looked like a little kids drawing, but it was precious to me!

Yes they all do look alike standing there in ranks. But I looked for my son's ears...they look just like his dad's. It was easy to pick him out based on that feature. When the call to liberty came....I laser beamed right to him. Daughter should be easy to pick out....she is 5'11" so she will be probably one of the very few women, if not the only one in the back rows.

Sobe-how funny...your comment made my day :-)) Yep, the letters from my daughter are reflecting that sentiment as well. She was raised in a Navy family but do you think a retired Commander dad, a reservist Chief Petty Officer mom, and an active duty Petty Officer brother could have given her advise before she left? Oh no, she thought we were all out of our minds. What I would not give to be a fly on the division's walls now.

Graduation is held inside a HUGE hall - that's why we recommend bringing binoculars. I was there before 7am, got great seats (2nd row right in front of his division sign) and still needed binoculars!

Cathy, find out from him before PIR where he will be standing in his division. He will know this during the last week because they will be practicing. My friend had a 6'5" sailor too and she said they couldn't spot him for the longest time. I can't figure that one out, but obviously she didn't know where he was standing in the formation. Turns out that my son was not only several rows back (he is very short) but also on the "inside" as they turn after walking in (away from bleachers). I had not a chance to see him until I received the DVD and saw him on it.

Well, Jessica, since my son was one of the shortest, I wish they had put him in the front since they put the tall ones in the back...because I never could see him during the entire PIR!
