Liberty is different than Leave.  Leave is similiar to requesting time off for vacation at work, they must submit a chit and have it approved.  Liberty basically means that they have "liberty" to…Continue

TXNavy - glad to hear your dad is better. Great advice you just gave - and so true! They are breaking the civilian out of these recruits and turning them into sailors. Dicipline is something new to some of these kids. Mine actually thanked us in one of his letters for making him do chores and coming home on time. Some guys had never made a bed before! I am framing that letter!!!! I got it in writing and he can't take it back now.. lol...

My dad's resting at home now--thank you for all your prayers. Also, if it makes ya'll feel any better in regards to IT....every division is "enjoying" IT right now. It is the best way to get the "me" out the recruit and thinking as a "team". Its okay hang in there all....we are getting ready to start the third week! yippee!

I don't think I've posted this video on this group yet. It is a great clip about BS-21 (Battle Stations 21) and you will see why it's so important that our recruits learn teamwork - not just to pass this important exercise, but to help protect each other out at sea as well. Turn your sound on and you may need tissue too!

Cathy: He can order the picture pkg A which has the piks, DVD and The Keel (yearbook) in it. I believe it is $174. But I understand that you can also order the DVD after PIR over in the NEX. My son ordered it with his pictures. Your sailor can pay for these out of his pay, or you can pay at PIR when you pick them up.

...AND....adding to SOBE's comments about IT, sometimes the one who caused the problem is made to sit and watch his shipmates do the IT! That is WORSE punishment. This happened in my son's division and he said the guilty recruit eventually ended up in tears. I'm sure whatever mistake he made never happened again!

nikosmom: My son would KILL to be 5'8"! He is a shade under 5'5" but weighs about 140. I have a feeling that when you see your son, he will no longer be 118 lbs! He will definitely have built some nice muscle weight and I bet will look better to you than he ever has ! I think it is wonderful that you are a Navy family which has got to be so helpful to your son...and to us on here! Share whatever wisdom you have anytime!

And, SOBE, isn't that the truth about the sailors looking alike! I was already crying from the first part of PIR (such a wimp!)...but when I couldn't find my son, I REALLY started to cry. My older son didn't see him either. It was so frustrating to watch the entire ceremony and never see him...but thank goodness for the PIR DVD where I could see him clearly as he marched in front of the Review Stand. Of course, couldn't see him after that in the dvd, but at least I saw him then.

Jophers: If they are assigned IT, that stands for Intense Training - which is NOT fun. Even if only one person messes up, the whole division gets IT. It teaches them to stand together thru good times and bad. Now, if someone tells you that they are going to school to be an IT, that stands for Information Technologist - which is what my son is learning to be at A-School.

Yesterday I got a letter from Cameron. He sounded tired but coping. He listed all the things in non military world he misses, got his BC glasses and they were about to start 1-1 day. He said his division had IT but I am not sure what that is. I am going to start to live for Thursdays as I get so excited to read his letters. As we live in Louisiana and he is going to A school in Pensecola, I wrote to him and told him about the final cap on the BP oil well looks like it is working. He also said he is now the mailman for the division so I shoud write to him more I think. I hand write my letters and it has been a real challenge writing proper letters not short e-mails or texts to get the message across.

What's amazing is that at PIR, most of the sailors look alike! Seriously, you would think you could point out your new sailor immediately, but you look around and say, geez - which one is he??? lol.... The larger ones lose weight, the lighter ones gain weight and all of them get in the best physical shape they have ever been in. And they get taller too! Well, not really. They just appear 2-3 inches taller because they learn how to stand straight and tall - not hunched over like apes. It's an awesome sight to see them, they look so proud.... because they are!

Hello all. Busy with the pizza restaurant tonight, but took a little break. Here is a link that will explain the rating system including the insignia for each. They are pretty easy to get the hang of. The abbreviated method is the informal or everyday way each sailor is known by. I had three YN3's in my shop besides myself when I was a third class...it got confusing sometimes until the Chief yelled out our last name. When one gets to E7 or above then usually we are called simply Chief, Senior Chief, or Master Chief . Anyway here is the website to help to familiarize yourself with the rate(pay grade or rank) and the rating(a sailor's job specialty) http://www.navy.mil/navydata/navy_legacy_hr.asp?id=259

Pensacola is a great place to go to "A" school. Navy son went to AW(aircrewman) school there.
