I read there is a way to adopt a sailor for those who will not have family at graduation. Anyone know how that works? We will have quite a few family members in GL for PIR and could perhaps provide support for a Sailor that has no family there. I think it would be very sad to have no one there for you when you graduate--I know I wouldn't want my son to go through that.
Thanks.

Check with your SR and see if he has a buddy who does not have anyone coming. There is no program, it just happens when people care enough to make it happen. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend.
Thank you!
You are very welcome.
When you find out an answer to this question please let me know. My SR told me there are three girls in her division that will not have anyone there for graduation... would love to do something for them.
It appears from lemonelephant's post above that there is no program, just need a willingness to do something. I was thinking it was a formal kind of thing, but I guess it's just a matter of doing whatever you want to for them. She also has a link in her reply for some info. Hope that helps.
The only time that there is a formal "Adopt a Sailor" program is for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The rest of the year (and at the PIR's near Thanksgiving and Christmas), families make it happen on their own.
Does the SR have to sign up for Adopt A Sailor Program for Thanksgiving??...I'm not sure he would do that but I pray he does....we live in Arkansas, we will not be able to drive there for Thanksgiving and it will break my heart if he is there all by himself....as we will be traveling there for graduation the following weekend....
See the info in PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend.
