He really enjoys the job!  After Boot Camp, we do talk regularly.  He is assisgned to the USS Michael Murphy.  It is a brand new ship stationed at Pearl Harbor.  The longest time he was on the ship was when they were traveling from Maine to Hawaii which was from first of September to Thanksgiving.  He loves Hawaii but doesn't like being so far from home (Tennessee).  Since arriving in Hawaii, he did live on the ship for a while to save money primarily but, after several short stints at sea for testing, they dry docked the ship and he moved on base into nice accomodations which were about like a hotel room.  He is getting married July 20th and they have military housing that he will move into July 11.  So, he has not lived on the ship 90% of the time.  Where he works on the bridge is right next to the Captain so, he considers that a priviledge.  Hope this helps.  PIR is amazing!  An experience we will never forget!

Oceanby:  I hope your son ends up in Virginia!  We live in Los Angeles, CA so we were really hoping she would get stationed in San Diego...didn't happen :(  You're almost done with boot camp!  Congratulations!  A school is so much easier, I got to talk to my daughter pretty much every day...so great! You'll love PIR, seeing the change your new sailor has accomplished will be an amazingly proud moment for you! It was for me that's for sure.  Let's definitely keep in touch!

Hey katysmom!  It looks like there are not many of us QM moms on here!  My son has PIR this week and will continue to A school.  I'll be happy to have it over with!  I only WISH  he would wind up in Virginia!  We are in NC which is much closer than Hawaii, California, or Japan!  I figure they are at least getting training they can use when they get out of the Navy (unlike other ratings).  They can work for the oil companies, private ship owners, or even work for the cruise industry.  Let's stay in touch.  I'd love to hear how she is doing!

Happy to be a part of this group!  My daughter just finished A school and has been home for the past couple of weeks but is preparing to leave to Virginia....this is definitely a new experience for both of us, she loves it though, me not so much :) I miss her always.

Is there anyone out there?  My son will PIR Oct 5 and then do A School for QM.  Is it still at Great Lakes?  We had a recruiter tell us it had moved to Virginia. What do any of you know about this?
