I was secretly hoping my son wouldn't PIR. That way, I could just use the money to go to his A school when he was allowed visitors. Since he did PIR we spent all our $$$  to go see him for a grand total of 9.5 hours and now can't afford to go see him at A-school. hahaha. But, it was soooo worth it to see my boy. Just say'n.

sbarber- Yes I know that there will be no PIR. I learned that some time ago. I do speak with him once a week and write every day. He has already started doing some of the stuff. that he needs to do to finish up boot camp. We are planning a trip to see him at A school unless he is stuck at GL waiting to go to A school for a few days then We will go there for a visit. Thanks for the Info.

Colten's Mom Donna: My son just left RCU, If I understand you right he was only 4 days shy of PIR??? I made friends with mom's on Ship 5 and when their SR's were injured that late in training they did not PIR they did BS21 out of RCU then on to their A schools. My son left for bc on 6/8 he was injured 1 month later (knees) he was just 6 days ago put back into a Div. he said RCU sucks but that changes with the RDC's yes they change in there and some are better than others. I do want to tell you keep him positive write lots of letters and he should be calling home every weekend my son did. Mostly I wanted to tell you that you should be bracing yourself for the let down that his group has already PIR'd most likely you will not be going to a PIR and thats just to prepare yourself mentally not to discourge you. I know how much the PIR means to us moms and I just don't want you to be devastated when you hear that. Tell him to stay positive and that he has lots of support out here. I have seen you in Texas Moms too and thats where I learned of his injury, so he has tons of support and prayers going his way. You can friend me if you would like to talk more. Best of luck and lots of prayers. Stacy

Hi Donna- i am really sorry that you too have to go through this... RCU is not a very good place to be in... My sister broke her tibia during the final PFA 10 days prior to PIR... She stayed in the VA hospital for a month... Then transferred to RCU to continue the healing process. She was very frustrated and devastated the entire time she was there 7 months total. She cried (we cried) everytime we talked to her! Her right leg had a full cast and used crutches to walk around and do stuff for her self... Letters, letters, letters full of support and encouragement! Prayers are powerful!
I also print out lots of quotes and jokes for her... Puzzles and word search to keep her sanity. She had it laminated and passed it around so everyone can use it!
He can do this! Tell him to live it day by day... Don't think about tomorrow yet!

End of May my sister was considered FFD-fit for duty then she started running... She could not pass her run, her legs were hurting! After her 13th and last try she made it!
She said she cried so much after... She could not believe that she did it!
It took her 9 months total before she got the cap!
I will pray for you and your son's speedy recovery!

Oh no, Colten's mom- that is so sad. I misunderstood you last time you posted. I thought you meant he phased up and was out of RCU. I don't even know what to tell you about his thoughts of coming back home. I can't blame anyone for feeling that way. I don't know how I would be if the same thing happened to me. I've heard so many rumors that once someone gets a medical discharge it is very hard to get back in, so next time you talk to him maybe you could tell him about the rumor. It is very sad being in there. My son's phone calls home were somber -absolutely NOTHING to talk about on his end b/c he did nothing all day. (except laundry). He hated when I asked him questions. He still does in fact. He only wanted to hear word of the outside world and wanted nothing to do with talking about RCU. What phase of P.T. did he make it to? the good news is, there are only 4 phases so if he is in phase 2 he is half-way there!!

My son is in RCU right now and he hates it. He was 4 days from being finished with boot camp when he was diagnosed with stress fractures in both legs. One of which went completely thru the bone. So nw we have 6 weeks of rehab. He has been there for 2 weeks already and he was up beat last week when he called so I thought oh this is going to be ok he is managing. But then this week when he called he was very down talking about wanting to get a medical discharge and then he could reinlist after he was healed. I tried to encourage him to stick it out. So I haven't heard anything since then so hopefully he did not discuss that with the Doctor yesterday. I guess we will see ehat happens.

cntryangel- tell him he CAN do it. Tell him some success stories!  It is an awful place to be - but given notice that he will be in there for only 2 weeks is very encouraging. My son hated it there. And yes, he felt even worse as an injured recruit b/c he felt that it made him look like  a wimp. But that was far from the truth. I don't think he is right about mail only on Mondays. I am pretty sure my son got mail every day. I know you won't be able to talk to him until next weekend but write him tonight and tell him that he absolutely CAN do it. It will be over soon. I'm telling you - my son wanted out so bad, but the doctor wouldn't clear him. Now, after 6 long weeks in RCU and finishing up his last 14 days of regular boot camp, he is able to have his freedom and respect again. He is so close to his goal. RCU is not a comforting place where they show the recruits support and compassion. They are just as mean to them in RCU as if they just arrived to bootcamp. There was only 1 person there who was actually NICE to my son and that was the Navy Diver who worked in the pool area (my son had to do a lot of swimming since he couldn't walk). My boy litteraly did laundry 7 days/ week b/c it got him out of the unit. He was miserable. But, it beat the alternative - being discharged. Please keep us posted!!!  Maybe he will even released from RCU early!!!

My son was set for PIR on August 12th. The weekend before he called and said he had a cold and was not able to pass the run. He said they sent him to fit, but he still had a chance to pass the test before PIR. We were told by the PAO that he was running Thursday morning but our flight was scheduled before his test ended. So we took a chance. When we landed we found out he didn't pass. We went to PIR anyways, and afterwards got a 1 1/2 hour visit with him. Apparently on Wednesday he was diagnosed with pneumonia and actually hadn't run on Thursday. We told him to do as the doctors told him and keep his chin up and that we are so very proud of him. The one thing he did say was he didn't want to go to RCU. Well all week we have been waiting for a call or letter from him. Finally today he called. He is in RCU. He is so very depressed. He hates it. He said that he is not sure if he wants to stay if he has to stay there. He said in a way they make you feel worse for being in RCU. Now I know this might be just his experience, but it just breaks my heart. He said he has two more weeks there at least. He said they only receive mail on Monday's. Not sure if that is true. He did give me his new address. I told him I would support him no matter what he decides, but that he should try and speak to someone about how he is feeling. (i.e. needing all the encouragement he can get) I just want to be able to keep his spirits up. It is so hard getting these phone calls and knowing you have little power over the situation. I know he is a man, but he will always be my baby. Reading some of the information about RCU makes one wonder if they are there to help or weed out those less desired. I know boot camp is a mind game, but when they are injured or sick, shouldn't they motivate them to succeed?
