I just can't believe it was April the last time I got in touch with all of you! 5 months have already come and gone...
I'm inviting you all to come to a packing party at my house in Plainville, MA on Saturday, 10/19th. We will begin at 12:30pm and go until we finish packing everything.
We are adopting the USS Shoup and they will be receiving their packages around Thanksgiving. We decided to send Thanksgiving desserts and pies in a jar. Decorations. Cards. And, nerf footballs. What goes with Thanksgiving better than football!!
One of the MA Moms has gotten a group together and will be taking care of making 300 pies in a jar for the sailors on the ship. There will be 100 apple, pumpkin & pecan. I've gotten some small decorations and napkins. I am also planning to make some homemade cookies.
They have a wish list which I will post. (I forgot to click and copy it before I started writing this post!!)
I really hope that some of you will feel free to come along and help make this adoption a HUGE success.
It will also likely be my swan song packing party! I am really hoping to move to Lancaster, PA before it really gets cold and snowy. I have a sister and brother who live in the area & I just feel the need to be close to them. It has been very hard living here since my husband died. I keep expecting to see him around every corner. I know my memories will go with me, but at least they will be in a new and different place!
Leave a comment if you are planning to come and what you are going to bring. We are going to need to have everyone pick up some packing boxes!! Our new mom, Chelita, is the one doing the baking!! She is really sweet, you'll enjoy meeting her.
@ Nick's Mom - we are now up to 4 moms. So we will have a lot of fun!! Can't wait to meet you IRL.
Any other RI Moms, you are more than welcome to come to my house in Plainville. Send me a PM or friend me & I'll send you my addy and cell.
@ Nick's mom, yes, everyone purchases or gets donations of items to send. Then everyone brings their "goodies" to the party and we pool everything and pack up as many boxes as we have things to put in them.
As it stands now, there are only 2 definites (me and another MA Mom) & you who are interested and able to come. So we've decided not to travel all the way out to Southboro. I looked and saw you come from the Smithfield area. Which town would be easier for you to get to Plainville (about 5-8 miles from Pawtucket) or Brockton? Dee and I thought we'd just get together and pack what we have. I'd love to meet you IRL. We can make it earlier like 10-10:30'ish and it won't take too long to pack what we have. You are a first timer & I don't want to disappoint you or have you be discouraged. I think it is just not a good date!! So let me know & we'll go from there. I'm going to send you a friend request so I can PM you my addy and phone number. Talk to you soon!
@Proud Navy/NYPD Mom (Donna) - thanks for the info. I really want to join you but I am having several people over Saturday night and need to get things done in the house (cleaning, shopping, some food prep). Will have to see how much I can get done in the next few days. Question - do we buy and bring these items for the packing ourselves?? First timer so new at this. Thanks
Just wanted to add, that yesterday it was decided to dedicate April's adoption of the staffs at 2 Combat Support Hospitals in the sandbox to honor the staffs at MGH, BI/Deaconess, BMC, B&W, Children's, Tufts who saw first hand on Monday what our adoptees see and deal with every day. Notes will be sent to all of the hospitals in Boston.
Anyone planning to come to the packing party: please bring a bag lunch for yourself (or you can purchase something from the cafeteria) and, if possible, bring along a picture of your sailor. Requested packing items include hygiene items - body wash, deodorant, shampoo & conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste & floss. These items are requested by both the men and the women. The women would like body wash & skin care lotion that "smells nice!" and they have requested body wash scrunchies and hair elastics (have to be brown or black). Both would like fitness, exercise magazines. They have requested healthy snacks - trail mix, raisins, nuts, beef jerky, energy bars, etc. although some fun snacks will not go uneaten!
I hope this information is helpful & I hope to meet some more RI Moms. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them here as a comment or send me a PM. Thank you everybody!
@Nick's Mom -- Yes, the date has been set for this Saturday, 4/20. As of right now, it will still be held at Harrington Hospital in Southboro, MA. We will begin at 11:30AM & we have the room until at least 5PM (although I don't think we will need it for that long!). Let me know if you can make it. I look forward to meeting you!
Proud Navy/NYPD Mom (Donna) - has a date been set for the packaging of boxes yet? I'd like to help out if you need the help! Let me know, thanks
I haven't heard from any RI Moms yet. I hope that there will be a representation from this state as well...
It is only an hour ride from Providence. I live in Plainville & would be able to take at least one person with me, but there may be room in other MA Moms' cars.
Please consider it and join in for a fun time!!! Date is still to be decided so leave your preference here and I'll add it to the list. Either 4/20 or 4/27. The one which is convenient to the most Moms will be the date we go with.
Hi Everyone!
We are going to have another regional packing party. The date is to be determined. It will be either April 20 or 27 and will be held at Harrington Hospital in Southboro, MA. Harrington Hospital is located right off Rte. 84 - an hour from Providence. I hope that some RI Moms will be able to attend this time. Our packages will be going to the staff working at 2 combat hospitals in the sandbox. More info on them and what is on their wish list. For now, we are just looking for responses from you all. Really hoping to meet you in real life!!
Good Morning RI Moms!
I hope the sun is shining where you are. Here in Plainville it is a very weak sunshine and lots of thick gray clouds. But it doesn't smell like snow - so maybe we're going to get a spring shower?! Hope so.
Question for all of you: I received a message from a CT Mom about having another Southern New England packing party & have talked with a couple of MA Navy Moms about it. The consensus was a resounding YES. I polled them for dates and ended up with 3 separate Saturdays: 4/13, 4/20, 4/27.
They all agreed that Harrington Hospital was a nice central location - an hour from all the state capitals. I will call and see about booking a conference room again & find out what dates are available there.
The group being adopted by Molly's Adopt A Sailor (aka MAS) for April is a first. We have never adopted a group like them before. I'll give you a hint ... there is a connection to MAS ~ Special Hugs.
I know December was a tough time tto plan a packing party, but April will (hopefully) be much better for everyone. I want to invite you to consider coming. It was the biggest group we've ever had (15, I believe) and we shipped 90 boxes to some Airmen in the sandbox. 90!!! Can you believe it? And they finished in just about 3-1/2 to 4 hours, but that includes talking and laughing.
I'll be getting back to you soon with the dates if Harrington can host us again.
In the meantime, check your calendars and then leave a comment about which dates will work best for you. As always, the date convenient to the most Moms will be the one we will go with.
I'm excited. I hope you will be too!!
