OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Commissioning Process
Although I am a year off, I would like a MOM to explain the commissioning process to me. From what I understand, they graduate one weekend and then we return for the commissioning ceremony. Is it just a ceremony or is there a banquet after the event? Can we bring everyone in the family? My son is at Penn State, so I am sure it is different at each university.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi Jill, My son graduated from WPI this past May. (He did his ROTC training at Holy Cross)
My son had his commissioning the same day as his graduation. The commissioning was at 8:30 in the morning then the graduation at 11:30. (They had coffee and desserts-but not much time to enjoy)
He was commissioned with all the armed forces....the following week he went to Holy Cross to participate with the Navy unit only.
I know every school is different.....

My son is also a year away from Commissioning, but I've stepped up my inquiries about this process since we are a non-military family and have no idea how this all works. At my son's school, graduation is in the morning and Commissioning following shortly thereafter. Based on information here, I was prepared to purchase a sword as a Commissioning gift. Glad I asked DS about that because he said that the only sword he would really want is the one awarded by the unit and voted on by the staff and battalion members. He will not be eligible for that sword as he is graduating next December and they only award it at Spring Commissioning. Anyway, the sword is out. I asked him about invitations. He said we provide a list to the unit and they mail them out. (Not sure I like that, as I would like to include information about where we will have a party afterwards.) Oh...a party/reception afterwards is what they do here--everyone on their own on this, rather than one big party. We will check into renting a room somewhere and doing a small catered event. We only live two hours from his college, so I anticipate that we will have a good group of folks who can and will show up this.
Thanks for starting this thread---I have much to learn over the course of the next year.

My son graduates on a Saturday in May and Commissions the next day (Sunday). I'm guessing it's different at every University. My son is at Norwich in Vermont.

Every school is different, as you can see. At MU the NROTC Commissioning is a Sat morning, immediately followed by the Tri-ROTC Commissioning followed by a NROTC informal gathering w/ cake n such. Later in the day is Baccalaureate Mass & MU graduation is then the next morning.
At MU the Ceremony itself is outside at a significant location on campus. It consisted of each individual MIDN being sworn in by the Officer of their choosing. Then the changing of the cover, exposing the stripes & (for guys) switching the shoulder bars -- this to was done by people chosen by the MIDN. Our dd chose her brothers to expose the stripes & her father & i to take care of her cover. That process makes them "fully dressed" as an Officer. Then someone who is/was enlisted then comes forward to give them their "first salute." When they shook the enlisted's hand after the salute the officer slipped the enlisted a silver dollar. The enlisted was also personally chosen by each MIDN. Some MIDN just had immediate family there, some had a dozen or more people there. Since MU's is outside, there is no space limitations.
After the NROTC ceremony, the Air Force ROTC & Army ROTC & NROTC all join together for another Commissioning ceremony done by someone from Washington or some such place. Lots of brass on that stage.
Other than the informal gathering hosted by the NROTC Unit the MIDN were all on their own for the rest of the weekend/graduation. Some had parties together, some had private parties, some were basically never seen again -- off with their own families & doing their own thing. It was a great weekend & i'm looking forward to doing it all again this May. Our Ens daughter is swearing in our MIDN son. So cool.
Have your son talk to some MIDN alum from his Unit. They'll have great tips & suggestions.
