Hi everyone :)

I posted an updated list with those that needed to be added as of today.  If you're missing and don't want to wait around for me please go right ahead and copy and paste with yourself added.  Otherwise I will update the list every 2-3 weeks.  Thanks- Great contact info for new moms :)

Paulette

I have a few questions. Are there any moms out there with sons or daughters that did not get the scholarship but still signed up for the NROTC program? I am hoping for some additional information on the program when out of that circle.  We have heard that the potential for scholarship opportunities has become increasingly tight. Also, are there any opportunities for summer your when child is not on scholarship? If not are there any other avenues. Also, are there any percentages of those who drop out of the program.

Thanks for the help.

Hi-

My daughter actually entered NROTC her freshman year without a scholarship-  those kids are called College Programmers.  Primarily- she never applied it.  She was 100% set on USNA and just never checked out ROTC.  SO-  when the academy fell through there she was with her backup schools and some academic scholarships but her heart still set on the Navy.

The shortened version is that we paid for her first semester like any other student but she participated in NROTC just like all the scholarship students.  No one in the program knows the difference-  except the CO and a few other officers.  At that time there were 2 & 3 year Scholarships available for the college programmers AND the CO could also nominate 1 or 2 of the students he felt were qualified for a CNET Leadership Scholarship (3 1/2 year).  She was fortunate to receive a 3 1/2 year Leadership scholarship (the only one for that year) and the only scholarship awarded to Navy Option College programmers that year.  There was also one awarded for Marine Option.  Since then it's my understanding that it has increasingly gotten more and more difficult to get them because of budget cutbacks.

The unit had one of the kids that did not receive a scholarship try for the Officer Program where they pay for your 4 year degree (but don't participate in ROTC) then complete OCS at the end.  It's a great program with lots of benefits.  I know there's a mom on here that is more familiar about that one.    Tough one to qualify for but he did it and is very happy.

The problem with staying in NROTC without any scholarship is that it takes an incredible amount of time (too much for no payback).  Much more than I ever would have thought until my daughter entered.  Most students have to drop and focus their efforts elsewhere if the Navy isn't paying something.

I heard from my daughter that between Freshman year and Graduation, for her unit, they expect a 30% drop rate for one reason or another.

I'm happy to share the details of Kara's experience with the college programming trek if you want to email me:  pvansice at rochester.rr.com  :)
