Yes, no more shoveling snow & ice off the car at 5 AM to get to PT on time. And I just found out yesterday about all the parking tickets he got at U of R last year! However, academically, he expects U of R to me more challenging. He is a Chemistry major. RIT is tough in engineering, but chemistry is a tiny dept. and was not hard for him. U of R has a nationally renowned Chemistry Dept., so he thinks it will be harder. He LOVES chemistry and math and is willing to work hard. He is up for it and just feels that he fits in better there. The room they gave him is in a suite with 5 juniors who I think like to party, so he's going to have to use some self-discipline. :-)

June4th: My daughter is not ROTC. However, when faced with a life decision that requires commitment, she makes herself crazy, over-thinks everything , questions everything, etc. I used to get pulled in and worry, or try to solve for her and we would argue. Over time, I have learned that she needs to go through this in order to come to a place of emotional peace with her decision. So I don't argue the pros and cons, so much as just try to listen to her and parrot back what she is saying to her. Sometimes I tell her "OK, it's not too late to change your mind." and if she starts to defend the decision, the we both know it's what she wants. Or I tell her to imagine her life long term if she didn't do this. Usually, it makes her realize that she sees her life in the exact place this decision would bring her. My son is different. He knows what he wants, doesn't need to process it emotionally, cant wait to make the commitment to the Navy, and is mad that it will be delayed because of his Medical Leave of Absence due to his shoulder surgery.

University of Rochester. He was already in the NROTC Unit at the University of Rochester (which has 4 schools included). He was attending Rochester Institute of technology last year, but liked the University of Rochester better and also liked the idea of having both school and NROTC on one campus.

BuMed (Bureau of Medicine) gave him 6 mos. Med LOA. But he hopes it will be less. Once his Doctor says he can resume PT he has to start doing PT while still on LOA. Once the Unit sees that he is up to speed, they notify BuMed and request that they end his LOA. He had the surgery at home in Missouri, and his school is in NY. His Dr said he would find us an orthopedic surgeon willing to take over his follow-up care as a professional courtesy. New Dr. can't bill for it as follow-up care is covered with the cost of the surgery. So we have to hope he finds a willing colleague. Then we also need to find a new physical therapist. Thanks for listening. My head spins sometimes. Oh, and he transferred colleges for this coming year, and until a few days ago they were telling him that they ran out of housing and had no room for him. Both the ROTC Unit and his academic adviser called on his behalf and he got a room. His freshman year was a breeze, but it has been a challenging summer. He would hate that I'm sharing this--he keeps it to himself--but it helps me to share with other moms who understand.

wow HelenP, not the way you expected your summer to close out!!  Prayers your way for all to work out & your MIDN to get back on scholarship & on track w/ the Navy.

I agree, it made more sense to move forward w/ his surgery & keep things progressing.  Plus, it shows Navy he is serious about wanting in, instead of just sitting back, waiting & coasting.

wow, helenp - i'm stressed just reading about your current ordeal.  glad your boy is healing well and all is good (for the time being).

Thanks everyone.

No it's on our health insurance. We could have tried to get the Navy to pay for it by filing a Federal Workers' Compensation claim. But these kids are in a gray area--not technically active duty yet--and it would have been rejected and then we would have had to file an appeal, and in the meantime he would have had to wait to have his treatment until that was resolved one way or the other. It would have delayed everything for many months. It made more sense to move forward.

Helen,

So sorry to hear about his injury and the need for surgery. How long is the recovery expected to take? Sounds like physical therapy is working. His continuing treatment is all covered by the Navy? You all are in our thoughts!
