During CORTRAMID West in June my son dislocated his shoulder and it was determined he needed surgery. While he recovers and rehabs he must be on Medical Leave of Absence from ROTC. :(  He will be a sophomore this year and they explained that if he waited to have the surgery and go on Med LOA until after he started his sophomore year, if something went wrong to make him unable to be commissioned, he would need to pay back. But if we do it before his sophomore year, he wouldn't. So he had his surgery right away and the Unit requested Med LOA. While on Med LOA he does not get his scholarship or ROTC benefits (stipend, books, etc.) and WE MUST PAY TUITION! However, if he participates in all his ROTC activities that he is medically capable of (classes, activities, duties), when he is fit to return to full PT  and the Bureau of Medicine takes him off Med LOA, they will reimburse his scholarship retroactively. This has been a very stressful time. This is what my son wants to do with his life. He LOVES it. And we are dependent upon the scholarship. But the surgery went well and he is ahead of schedule with physical therapy. So it looks like it will work out.

It is also  my understanding that they must make a commitment at the beginning of their sophomore year and if they quit after they sign the contract, they have two choices:  pay back the scholarship or serve 4 years enlisted.

Hi all, i'll just add info from my experience...

My MIDN never had to have khaki shorts, just PCA & khaki cargos apparently count as PCA at their unit cuz that's all my son has.

Shoe polish -- they both had to have Parade High Gloss black Polish.  i never could find it in our rural area so i ordered it online.  Then i found out the army/navy surplus 1/2 mile from their unit sells it -for cheaper!!  My dd had to use one of her tshirts as a polish rag [even tho she had an old tshirt for polish], our dd's orientation was more reasonable & let them use their polish rags.

DS has always used an electric razor, but he does not have a heavy beard at all, if he did i think he'd use a blade as they do get checked regularly, especially on uniform days.  If your son has a heavy beard, i would recommend a blade, unless you've found an electric razor that is really good.

Ironing... the only Navy related things either of my MIDN have had to iron are their uniforms.  No underwear, no tshirts, not even everyday shirts.

My son begins NROTC Orientation in 3 weeks.  Khaki shorts are not on our list of items, eitherm but units are different.  As far as a shoe shine kit, our list just says "shoe polish and rag".  again, another difference perhaps.

thanks, helenp - never thought about a regular razor vs an electric one.

My son got an electric razor and had to switch to a regular razor for a closer shave. they check their faces and they must be smooth. We also didn't need shorts, just PCA (proper civilian attire). Each unit is a bit different.

And where do you get khaki shorts without cargo pockets for orientation?  I'm thinking JC Penny?

Help.... got the letter to proceed...

What kind of razor electric or  regular, what kind of shoe shine kit?  HELP... also if I box up his white t-shirts is that something he will have to iron?
