Welcome Mom of 2 :) and no you didn't join too soon !  There is just a lot of chat sometimes on this group so you might need to scroll back quite a ways to find some information about applying.  I know there is some here.  Any questions you have can definitely be answered as most of us have been there in one way or another.  Good luck to your son in the process.

June4th, the 3 nonactive years are if for any reason at all, the Navy decides to do a re-call for whatever reason, she will be re-called back into the active Navy. This can happen for deployments, any type of emergency disaster, or anything the gov along with the Armed Forces deems necessary. The thing is, not everybody is called, it is per her specialty, some will never get a recall, others, who's specialties are in 'high' demand may. I would imangine submariners, aviation and a few others deemed high priorities will get called first. Operation Iraq/Afghanistan Freedom had the most recalls to date, but you can see why. It also has to do with how the numbers of officers look in her field...are they over/under strength?  15 years ago, (before OIF/OAF) people didn't ever worry about getting called back in....today, it's a possibility, as you well know. Rest assured, they will explain what the in-active status entails, and she should def ask and lay out all her questions....yeah, it does tack on more years...

I have a question....my daughter is going to be a soph and she is now getting nervous about the signing.....I know the commitment is 5 years but what does the 3 years of non active entail?
Comment by ArmyNavy mom on July 31, 2011 at 3:32pm
moleskin def...bandages..maybe part of the first aid kit, not for blisters...and don't forget a small safety deposit box that only they have a key to. Most dorms don't have any drawers that lock and some rooms have no closet doors or doors that can't lock. At my son's school, it's mandatory to have one to keep all important papers, money, whatever...

Pattie,

Sorry to hear about your son, my prayers are with him.

Pattie sure hope your son recovers quickly. I share the anxiety of hearing that a kid broke away from home. Many here have gone though it.

I've been off for a while and catching up. My daughter is a second year now, it has gone by so fast. To the incoming kids, I agree, don't buy tons of new clothes, do practice ironing and run lots. Shamefully my kids didnt have a real working knowledge of laundry. Put together a mini medicine cabinet for them tailored to what they used this year. Blisters, tweezers? Show them how to use a small sewing kit and of course send duct tape with them.

Look back through here for the fall posts about the homesickness/I'm struggling phone calls. We all have been there. As with any list we all have different voices however we have a common bond. We love our kids and want them to be happy and strong without too many bumps, bruises and only reasonably sized/fast healing blisters.

Kris who cried every time kids left for college the first time.

Carolyn~ Mountain Warfare is (Marine Option 2C cruise) is held in Bridgeport, CA. The training center has a web site, it is beautiful. Brit loved it, hard work and rain but he got  to repel down cliffs. He also got his first 3 coins, which are a big deal. However the biggest deal to his younger siblings was the MREs he got to bring home. They loved them. Now trying to mentally prepare myself for next summer and OCS, since that will be most of the summer.

Comment by suvwi on July 29, 2011 at 12:23pm

I think it depends on the airlines. Brit flew home on Frontier with his gear for Mountain Warfare (plus all his stuff for summer) and was prepared to pay to get that stuff through since he wasn't active at that point. They took without a thought, thanked him for his service. I think he flew Southwest to and from Mountain Warfare and had no problems either. I agree with you Carolyn airlines are very random these days.

On another note Carolyn didn't your son go to Mountain Warfare?
