He is on active duty when he does the cruise though...my son's group did not have to pay...it really depends on the person at the ticket counter, the policy should be cut and dry but unfortunately, it isn't.

Seans mom...here's the problem...they have "laxed their baggage policy" due to the Delta incident....they are so used to seeing Soldiers on deployment in uniform that everybody else is not 'active'. You bet your son is on active Navy duty...so you can call the airline to explain he should not have gotten charged and they can give him a voucher to cash OR he can claim it (with receipt) when he closes out his travel itinerary. The Navy will not have him pay. The policy seems to different with the employees of these airlines, one will allow the orders, the next won't. I travel alot for the DoD and always go through the same hassle w/my ID....end result is the inconvenience of having to explain his situation but he won't have to fork out the cash...hope this helps....tell him to keep his receipts.....

Susan...exciting....yes...this is just like a deployment...when I would go, it was fairly easy to keep up w/the protein...it just gets boring eating the same things after awhile....we made our own weights in Iraq, yes, it's possible..military guys are amazing at the resources they use to stay in shape. Like Barb said below, tuna is convenient and packed full of protein....peanut butter is easy to take and send, canned chicken for a change in taste...nuts are great....esp almonds...was going to say eggs, but God knows he may not want to eat anything local like that....good luck to him, what an opportunity...he will find a way to work out and keep up on his protein....4 months is easy....he'll be back before you know it...

I don't know if any of you have experienced this with your kids but each summer  seem to be a bit different in feeling.  As mine gets older and we adjust, the mood shifts a little.  The first year- she couldn't wait to get back to school (to the point that it just about crushed my heart).  This year she is so happy to stay home and chill with anyone that is here at the house :)   In between there it has varied anywhere along the spectrum.  We call her the "bungee child".  A term coined by another parent here that I thought was just perfect.  Bungee feelings applies pretty well to me I guess.
