Dyanne, that's RIGHT...just enjoy...some of the moms are right on spot...things will fall into play when he gets to school. Take this advice, I was absolutely manic about things when my son went, but we found out alot. Don't go spending money right now unless it's for his dorm room. Most come w/refrigerator/micro..most, but not all. Best thing to do like one mom said, wait, your son's ROTC unit will have specific unit things he needs to get and some things will be issued. Relax.....he will let you know, and orientation/paperwork will cover alot. You will look back at this time and laugh....why did I stress so much???? but, yeah, when you are going through it....so many questions, too much to do, too little time. I just spent alot of $$ today getting him things to restock his room...but he's lucky. He knows his room mate and they are halfing up on everything to live by each day. Concentrate on getting him out the door....polish, this and that can be an easy trip to Wal-Mart when you all get there.....

Hi everyone!!

I totally agree with those who have said check with the Unit of the school to which your MIDN will be attending.  Every Unit is different in various ways.  Our MIDN wear khaki uniforms every Thursday.  They cannot wear jeans with holes, sweat pants, athletic shorts, non-leather flip flops, etc any time.  [athletic wear can be worn when working out, of course]

They don't get white uniforms until sometime spring semester.  They don't get their utilities until just before CORTRAMID at end of Fr year.

MU's Unit has info about all this on their web site.  Here is the link in case you want to get some idea... http://www.marquette.edu/rotc/navy/incoming.shtml

Exciting times, for all of us :}

Dyanne,

My son is part of a NROTC unit in southern Ohio.  As far as attire goes, he has a day each week that he has to be in his Utilities (camo).  Some days, very rarely, he has to wear his Khaki uniform.  Every other day he is allowed to wear shorts (cargo or dress --- never athletic) and t-shirts or whatever kind of shirt he wants.  I definitely agree that you should wait and see once the year begins.  There are so many little things that will come up that you will have to get.  Be sure to send him with lots of dress shoe polish!  The shinier the better!

I was in your shoes this time last year and remember all the nervousness!  The first weeks are tough but it definitely gets better!

Wow...my son has a billion T-shirts ;-) this will be an adjustment...I will look for some khakies and do golf shirts work or do we need to look for button up shirts?

Dyanne-

We also are/were a non-military family :)   Had no clue about any of it.  Didn't understand even one acronymn (they all speak in letters as opposed to words- lol).

The one thing that caught us off guard when we arrived to move our daughter in for her freshman year was PCA (Proper Civilian Attire).  The kids at her school had to be dressed in PCA when not in uniform.  That meant, no jeans, no tshirts, must have a belt on all the time, etc.  That was the case for a while.  In any case-  we were off to Walmart like a lot of other moms because we didn't bring a lot of "PCA".  The unit slacked off after a while but it would have been nice to know ahead of time ....  :)

ViperGirl I so appreciate your comment.  I am completly oblivious to whatever is about to unfold.  He is totaly dependent on the scholarship to get a degree but had decided to become a computer engineer and UT is what his choice is for engineering schools.  His need to be part of something bigger than himself will be fullfilled I hope with the Navy and Lifestyle change.  I would appreciate any generic advice abou the NROTC anyone can give even if it isnt UT specific.  Like what should I send with him to school?  Any specific School supplies that seemed to be needed or clothing, or microwave/frig ect...

Thanks ArmyNavyMom

I have no doubt this will be an adventure for Bryan and his family watching as things unfold.  We have a cermony and then a BQ Aug 21st at UT, TX so we will just enjoy the day ;-)

Again....any info you need is best looked up for your son's school...every school is different, ceremonies, number of students chosen....the questions can go on and on.....sometimes, we need to dig on the internet and find out....it always has the right answer...for your situation.
