Hi everyone!!
I totally agree with those who have said check with the Unit of the school to which your MIDN will be attending. Every Unit is different in various ways. Our MIDN wear khaki uniforms every Thursday. They cannot wear jeans with holes, sweat pants, athletic shorts, non-leather flip flops, etc any time. [athletic wear can be worn when working out, of course]
They don't get white uniforms until sometime spring semester. They don't get their utilities until just before CORTRAMID at end of Fr year.
MU's Unit has info about all this on their web site. Here is the link in case you want to get some idea... http://www.marquette.edu/rotc/navy/incoming.shtml
Exciting times, for all of us :}
Thanks so much MizzouMom and proudbut nervous mom...
Are there any Sophomore NROTC going to University of Texas in Austin that can help out a Freshman mom?
Dyanne,
My son is part of a NROTC unit in southern Ohio. As far as attire goes, he has a day each week that he has to be in his Utilities (camo). Some days, very rarely, he has to wear his Khaki uniform. Every other day he is allowed to wear shorts (cargo or dress --- never athletic) and t-shirts or whatever kind of shirt he wants. I definitely agree that you should wait and see once the year begins. There are so many little things that will come up that you will have to get. Be sure to send him with lots of dress shoe polish! The shinier the better!
I was in your shoes this time last year and remember all the nervousness! The first weeks are tough but it definitely gets better!
Dyanne-
We also are/were a non-military family :) Had no clue about any of it. Didn't understand even one acronymn (they all speak in letters as opposed to words- lol).
The one thing that caught us off guard when we arrived to move our daughter in for her freshman year was PCA (Proper Civilian Attire). The kids at her school had to be dressed in PCA when not in uniform. That meant, no jeans, no tshirts, must have a belt on all the time, etc. That was the case for a while. In any case- we were off to Walmart like a lot of other moms because we didn't bring a lot of "PCA". The unit slacked off after a while but it would have been nice to know ahead of time .... :)
Thanks ArmyNavyMom
I have no doubt this will be an adventure for Bryan and his family watching as things unfold. We have a cermony and then a BQ Aug 21st at UT, TX so we will just enjoy the day ;-)
