Patti H.:

You are correct-  join the military and you are an "instant adult" somehow :/

I had this conversation with my daughter's XO early last year (who is a Marine) and I happened to refer to the midshipman as kids.  Well- IMO since they are college students, and all still fumbling there way through life and under the age of 20 for the most part- they are kids !   He stopped me mid-sentence with "Mam- THEY are not kids.  They are adults !!"  Oh, dear.  We then had the Mom to Marine chat that "these adults" will forever be our children.  But I must say that these officers for the most part give us mom's a wonderful amount of respect and patience.

Dyanne-  I worried about the exact same thing when my DD was a freshman.  When they return from orientation most of the units have a PIR (Pass In Review) ceremony where they come out looking all spiffy in their new uniforms.  Say their Oath, etc.  Although I am hearing from my daughter that due to budget cuts this year the incoming class may not be issued Whites until later in the semester :(  How disappointing.

Dyanne, it's an Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution.  No swearing-in to the military or anything.  I take it that your loved one's NROTC unit is having a gathering right after the kids return from their Orientation week?  It's neat to see the entire group (batallion) do their thing with marching in, the flag bearers, the oath of allegiance, a speech from the Captain. Best of all is the moment you spot your son/daughter in their uniform for the first time!  Seeing the change in stature and how the unit interacts after only one week is just the beginning of some of the great watershed moments they (and you!) will continue to have.   And that's just NROTC.   Then there's Navy life after that ~ which is on next year's docket for our family to learn about when our mid commissions in May 2012.  :-)

Can anyone explain the BarbQ / swear in for Freshman.  Are they swearing into the navy at this point or does that happen after they prove they can make the grades?

Thanks everyone.  I just love this site. ;-)

Just because I have open lines of communication with the CDR does not mean my son can't function......I think you are missing the point there Navymombarb. Apparently, my son does it on his own, because he was recognized for academic achievement, tiered I all year and passed both swim tests with no problems......if a school CDR givesn that option, it's another avenue to get info, and I am LUCKY that he does take the time to do that....it's not a bitch session with parents, otherwise, I'm sure he wouldn't have time for that....some school cadre just seem to have their stuff together better than others......

no, it's not that...there's a lot of different things that make it a challenging year..esp for Freshman.....it's NOT HS...no matter how good a student they are, or go in thinking, I've got this....they are challeneged..w/ROTC committments and other things...also, is your Freshman a communicator? my son keeps alot to himself, that's just how he is, very internal, so I literally spent most of last year asking the questions....he seemed to have things under control...yes, the grades, then something comes up that they have to do when you expect them home..but it's a positive experience...I pushed my son into doing this...he really loves it....I have a new found respect for ROTC guys...they must maintain grades and do all that ROTC and the Navy requires of them....if they start off in pretty good shape and can make the weight standards, that's one less thing to stress over....also the swim tests which my son says gets progressively harder...but hard never hurt anybody....you will your own experiences. Everybody's Freshman entered in different ways, everybody will have a different experience....I read some things on here and think, wow, glad my son doesn't have to worry about that, but I'm sure he has things to worry that other's don't....advice goes a long way, but...ultimately, you need answers, find them...the internet is GREAT....I know my son's CDR and get info from him, but that's ME.....N4M is a great site...I feel like I can relate to some of the mom's on here, esp the one's who have sophomores now....we've come a long way in a year, closing out with CORTRAMID. I cannot believe school is starting back up. My son has to be back next Friday. The fall semester will be hard as I won't get to see him until Thanksgiving.....
