Whitney, at a minimum the officers' wives will be in gowns. I just went back looking through some pictures - unfortunately, many of them were of the guys doing silly dances but I did see a few dresses, both long and short. I was in the same position you were in February. I called the administrative assistant at my son's NROTC office. She said there would be a mix of dresses. I asked my son to check with one of his mates to find out what HIS mom was wearing, and the answer I got back was "long gown." I hope that helps a little :)

Gale, that is exactly what i'm flipping back and forth about. Do i do what the rest of the "dates" do even though it lacks class and denigrates my upbringing. Or do I follow etiquette and proper up bringing and wear the appropriate dressed based on the words "formal" and the time of day. Grr too much ambiguity!

Hi, as far as gowns for the Navy balls, my daughter is a junior at Fordham and in NROTC, she has always worn a long formal gown to these functions and so have the other NROTC females, she has said the non-NROTC female "dates" wear short dresses.

DebE, I basically asked the question because when something is formal the correct and classy thing to do is to wear a long evening gown as long as the even starts at 5pm. I do realize that most young ladies have not been to galas and dinners in DC, or Military dinners or balls. I just really did not want to be the only lady dressed correctly according to etiquette. I see so many photos with girls wearing cocktail dresses, prom dresses, and short semi formals. I just want to fit in and not make a statement. :)

Whitney, just saw your question about dresses for the Navy Ball. My son attended the Marine Corps Birthday Ball last year and his date wore a long gown. He invited me to the Joint Services Military Ball in February of this year; I wore a long gown as did the 7 other mothers who were invited. I saw some short dresses, but not many.

Ok, So funny story. I had B email the guy who's in charge of the ball if it was formal long or formal short. Well, we did not get a response to that question. But I did single handedly get B put on the ball committee. Oops :)
