Cheryl: As always, thanks! you have been so helpful to me with your Tulane experience.
Lukesmama: I know how you feel, I will be a mess as well. My son is fairly independent, and I know he will have other people to look out for him. I am so proud of what he has done to get to this point, and hopeful that it will all work out the way it is supposed to. I will, however miss him terribly.

This is great info on "O" week, but how does it work for schools that don't have the dedicated orientation? We are hearing that at Tulane this year, they may not have a separate orientation prior to classes starting. This is a change from previous years. That really scares me. It means the stress of "O" week during the stress of their new classes, right?

Moms, regarding the guys' haircuts - my son (Marine option) has to cut his hair every week. I bought him a haircut kit at Best Buy that has a bunch of different blade configurations for fades (apparently that's what military haircuts are called). The directions were pretty clear. It was around $30, but I know there are cheaper ones you can find elsewhere. The ROTC son of someone I know made money while in college giving haircuts to the other ROTC kids!

Our son, who was at UNC, was sworn in before he started orientation week. We were able to be there and see him sworn in. We live only an hour away from school, so we did not move him into his dorm until he was finished with that week. They still had some time before school started. Good luck to you and your son.

Thanks DebE and all for the information on CORTRAMID. This is so extremely helpful! We are at Tulane now for Orientation and went by the NROTC building yesterday. My son was able to talk to one of the commanders and a newly commissioned officer. He is pretty pumped up. Although I am nervous and excited for him to start this new adventure, from what you all are saying, it goes very very fast.

spensmom - congratulations on his commissioning and good luck to him on quals! We'll be going through this in just three more years...

My son commissioned in May and will be on a destroyer based out of Pearl Harbor so will be doing quals. to get his SWO (surface warfare officer). He will be leaving sometime soon. I cannot believe that the past four years went so quickly. It seems like just the other day when he went off to CORTRAMID. We're really going to miss him.

Spensmom - I understand about it being too enclosed! What's your son interested in? Mine said that this week solidified his desire to pursue the aviation contract.

DebE - My son stayed up all night when he was on the sub because they have limited time on it. They surfaced and he, too, got to see the "light show" across the sub. He did not want to do subs, however, too enclosed, I guess.

To AlaskanMom - my son packed nearly everything in his sea bag, but took his personal things (contact lenses, shaving kit, etc) in a carry on. He didn't have any luggage problems.
