CronusMom, congratulations to your son - the "big check" presentation is very impressive. Our whole family was walking on cloud nine for the rest of the weekend! You asked for more detail about what the scholarship covers - here's what I know:

Covered:

Tuition

Books ($750 per year/$375 per semester maximum, deposited directly into bursar account)

Mandatory fees, such as activity fee, health insurance fee (if applicable), health center fee

Necessary uniforms - dress blues, summer whites, boots, khakis, uniform accessories, caps, etc.

Transporation to/from orientation and field exercises and a per diem (this is done on a voucher basis unless the NROTC unit is providing the transportation

Monthly stipend while in school ($$ information per class can be found on the NROTC website)

Not covered:

Non-mandatory fees

Laptop or other computer equipment

Room and board

Each school has its own policies regarding offering any assistance for room and board. You may want to contact the financial aid office at your son's school. There's usually a person on staff who deals with the ROTC students and he or she should be able to answer your questions. I found the contact person at RPI very helpful while wading through the first semester's bill :-)

Our son had his senior awards last night and received the *big check*. I had hoped for a little more detailed explanation of what the scholarship covers, but overall it went well. I was very impressed with the number of ROTC scholarships and academy appts covering all service branches. No one from our school (in Maryland) going to USNA this year, but 1 foundation scholarship. There were 3 NROTC, 1 marine option ROTC, 1 AFROTC scholarships, plus 1 USAFA, 3 USCGA, and 1 USMA appts. I think I covered them all. Congrats to everyone!!!

Wow, how fun to read about all the recognition our sons and daughters are getting! They have all worked so hard - but of course it's just the beginning. It is great to have this forum and these more experienced parents to inform us along the way.

Congratulations and good luck to all of you!

Our son just called home and sounded excited about the CORTRAMID experience - especially Marine week. Congratulations to all our young men and women, and I'm sure they realize how lucky they are to have such supportive moms/parents!

Beth hokiemom, I don't know about VA but it is now illegal in NC to text and drive. They haven't made a law yet to say it has to be hands-free. They are probably talking about it though.

I realize this is a little off topic now, but we just back from our HS Scholarship Awards night. We have a very large high school, over 1000 seniors. Awards were given out to a couple of hundred seniors. The NROTC officer showed up in uniform to present the scholarship to my son. He spent a few minutes talking about how difficult it is to get, and what it means. He presented my son with 'the big check', which was very cool. Afterward people - some that didn't know him - walked up to congratulate him. I was very proud of him. I'm sure all you know how that feels.

Congrats, Sarah Kelly! Was just there myself a couple of weekends ago. Now for the hard part........getting him moved! I think he feels a little overwhelmed.

Go get 'em, Cheryl! Tell your daughter to hang in there!

Kay,
For future reference, our son did drive to one of his cruise assignments in Norfolk. We live in NC so they agreed to let him do it. He had to get a sticker though to park his car which took some doing. He thought it was cool to have a DOD sticker on his car.

To those of you who's schools did not recognize your children's scholarships: make you sure you go ahead and do it yourself by putting it in your local paper :D
We did this with our daughter since hers was mid-year. This was the way to do it. The local papers are usually really responsive. She then had several comments from neighbors and friends who later saw the article.

It's very sad to think that a 4-year NROTC scholarship would be any less noteworthy at an award's ceremony than another earned scholarship. These scholarships are not handed out to just any kid that applies. Not being rocognized is insulting to say the least. We emailed both guidance and son's NJROTC instructor, and both responded that they arranging for the appropriate rep from Navy for presentation at awards night.
