Hi, Rose, I'm a "liberal" person.......whatever that means, and I am very, very proud of my son who is going into the Navy. I'm also glad to cheer for anyone who achieves/receives special recognition. My son did not get recognized as getting a Navy scholarship. His school did not even mention that he was a National Merit Scholar! I think it's mainly because people just don't think, and sometimes they just mess up! Congrats to all the scholarship winners!!!

I got choked up just reading Luke's mama's post! Our son has his awards on 05/27, and really hopes to get that big check. Almost as exciting as the day we heard he received the NROTC scholarship!! We were all in tears, even our son. Oh, gotta grab a tissue now . . . .

RNNM........the "military sabers" website is the same as what is on Marlow White. The links below get you there quicker. Good luck.

RNNM.........yes, we did buy him a sword. You can go to and on their home page on the lefthand side is a list. Click on "Swords and Sabers". You have two options - a regular sword and a premium one. You can also get a "package" (which is what we did) that includes the belt, gloves, special carrier for the sword, and the Navy knot. He was very pleased with it. He will be on a destroyer in Hawaii.

Thanks for all the congrats! Graduation was yesterday and he and his buddy did wear their uniforms. they were easy to spot in the "sea of Carolina blue". They were disappointed that the other grads who commissioned in the Navy and other armed services did not wear their uniforms. It seems to be a tradition at most schools. They did announce at the beginning of the ceremony that there were 17 who commissioned, which was nice. It was a proud moment to see them salute during the National Anthem.

thank you Beth----I will tell her to ask, but has anyone ever heard of a Mid being totally excused from either cruise?

Hi, All,
Well, it is done.....our son commissioned today and is now an Ensign. The ceremony was really nice and they were able to commission each one individually because this class was so small. We (dad & I) put his "boards" on. I thought I was not going to get mine snapped! :) Got video of everything. He is wearing his dress whites to graduation tomorrow along with his Navy sword. Something to look forward to everyone!

Hi moms---I have a question about soph-senior year midshipmen. Regarding summer cruise, does anyone know if there is a protocol for excusing your son/daughter from attending the cruise for certain extenuating family circumstances? If so, where and how do I begin that process? If there is not a way to do that, what is the "punishment" for not attending? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Vicki,
That's great that he is getting started on it now. It's an involved process. My son was in the early board (in the fall). He did the application early fall, and had his DODMERB physical over the summer. It felt great knowing that was out of the way. My son worked with the recruiter to make sure the application was complete, and also met with him for his Physical test. The application should list 5 colleges, rank ordered. The nice thing about getting it done early is that (hopefully) you'll hear early. We heard before Christmas. Good luck!
