Thanks for the encouragement, Cindy. It makes me a little nervous thinking of him having to find a place to live, etc. and be on ship and do everything he needs to do. I'm sure he'll be fine.....not so sure about his Mom! :) Commissioning in less than a month! Hard to believe.

NavyMomBarb....Oh that's great--although the pain is sooo bad initially, somehow, someway, things usually end up well. So glad for her...and so sweet of her to be concerned for the flight you're paying for. My daughter is always concerned about those things as well....they are such good kids, so it's just nice to be able to do something that makes them sooo happy--and them be so appreciative about everything! Congrats again...she'll really enjoy it....

Cheryl - Sorry to hear about your daughter. Hope she is better soon.

NMXXXY - All the best hopes/wishes to your daughter. I know this must be difficult for her especially since this has been going on for so long. I hope you are doing ok....it's hard on us moms as well.

Mizzoumom, I agree with NMXXXY that the Mids are pampered except when my son went to Camp LeJeune for the Marine part. (He did CORTRAMID East) They do not treat you like Mids. My son almost got heat stroke. It was 90+ degrees and very humid there. He has lived in NC all his life but that did not help! The "sub" and "air" part were brief in terms of being on board anything, but my son found it very interesting. He, too, decided then that subs weren't for him. She should go just for the fun and interesting things she would learn....at least that's my opinion. :)

Calimom, You might also get "Last Minute" airfares that are cheaper. You can try on www.kayak.com .

Hi Navymomxxy, we should get our daughters in touch with each other. I bet yours could give mine a lot of advice and guidance as she's been where mine is going to go! Female and on a destroyer! She will be on the Ross (DDG 71). She called today and is trying to sort through her apartment and organize what she wants to take with, send to Grandama's and send home! She has lots of different lists with things she needs to do. At least she is getting started!

Congrats to your daughter, Colleen.

CherlywithaC, Alaskamom: Yes, PIR does stand for Pass In Review, the ceremony for enlisted when they graduate Boot camp in Great Lakes. I know this in the ROTC group but I had to mention my son as he just graduated! He's in Goose Creek for A and Power school to be a Nuke EM.

Navymomxxxy, my daughter is going to Norfolk and she'll be on a destroyer. She has come a long way and worked hard to be ready to graduate. There were times we weren't sure she would make it, but thank the Lord, she did. I will have to adjust to both my kids being far away. My daughter is only 2 1/2 hrs from home now.

CherylwithaC, where does your daughter go to school? I hope the commander at my son's school works the same way!

Centhea, thanks for the insight. When my son talked to the commanding officer at Miami, he was told that each unit can nominate up to 5 college programmers at the end of the first semester for a national competition where 20 scholarships are awarded from ALL the units in the country. Sounds very competitive! At this point, I am not worried about him dropping out because he seems to thrive on challenges! Maybe he will feel differently though in a few months. I plan to continue to encourage him to follow his heart and his goals and let him know that I will always be here for him, no matter what he decides. Thanks again everyone for setting my mind at ease some. You ladies and your advice/experiences are truly priceless.
