Sara, Rose, and Callimom: My daughter is a sophomore at Boston College, in the BU ROTC unit. Small world. I believe she may know your boys! I am loving this site....

Now I am starting to worry! My son was not awarded a scholarship for the Fall. The letter stated that there was an exceptionally large applicant pool this year due to the poor economy and that they were only taking the very best students. After an initial disappointment, my son decided that it really didn't change his plans. He still want to be in the NROTC and become an officer. The recruiter told him that he would be eligible for a scholarship at the end of his freshman year and maybe as soon as the second semester. Now I am concerned that isn't true. He is very excited to go to college and be part of the college program. The scholarship would certainly help! Is there a place I could find out about the college program or does it vary from school to school? Do you have to apply? Who do we talk to? etc. Thanks for any input.

NMXXXY, I did try the "Inbox" but nothing. The e-mail said the message was sent to our entire NROTC group. I will try what Paulette did.

Regarding the post from Lukes Mama- I wanted to respond to her as well and ended up going right to her page and posting a comment there. I just did a search for her name to find it :)

And Hi Kay M.- Nice to see your name again too. Glad your son is hanging in there for the year :)

OK.......I have a question. When a message is sent to the NROTC group and you get notified by e-mail, how do you respond to it??? I don't see it anywhere on the comment wall. Do you access it some other way? It is from "Luke's mama" and she sounded very distressed.

Hey everyone :)
Ok- I know I've been away far too long when I'm having to spend so much time finding my my way around here again- yikes!!
I've just gotta say how much I've loved reading through some of these comments and seeing how supportive everyone has been. It's exactly the idea behind this board and what I needed as well :) It keeps coming back around believe me ! My daughter will have a really great few months and then will have a really rough time for a while- not fun at all. Just like a few moms here said I so badly want to pick up the phone or start typing an email and FIX IT for her.

I think it became almost vital for me to connect with some other ROTC moms so I could hang on to some common sense (or learn some maybe!!) in how to deal with an ROTC kid. While I'm in the middle of a meltdown, crisis, raging fit or crying jag their comments can bring me back to reality and keep from embarrasing my daughter to no end while not being able to help her anyway.
So- I'm going back to reading some more and just wanted to say Thank you all again for teaching me so much :) :)
Paulette- NROTC of a daughter coming home on spring break in 3 days !!!!

I cannot even imagine! We've had some problems here with someone breaking into girls apartments at a local college and raping them. Fortunately, no killings yet!!! I can imagine that it is terrifying for a mom of girls. Hang in there.

Cheryl, Where did this happen? How awful! It makes me very angry as well especially when they release rapists that they have been advised to keep in jail. This happened to a girl at my son's school a couple of years ago! Prayers for this family.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the "numbers" are out to the units for the commissioning SWO's to choose where they want to be. My son called the other day. He was excited that he was 101 out of 283. He was very worried that his major was really going to hurt his number (and I'm sure it did some) because it is not science related. He thinks being in top 50% will help him get where he wants to go. I hope so too! We're very proud of him.

SusanW, Just some comments about the surgery. I, myself, just had that surgery in August. Recovering from the surgery was fairly easy. After the day of surgery (when I stayed on the sofa), I was up on crutches and then with a cane before the week was up. Here is the kicker, though. For some reason my surgeon did not insist on physical therapy right away.....he gave me the "option". I didn't have a clue so put it off. Big mistake! Be sure your son gets rehab. I know he's young and I'm old, but I think it is a good idea so those muscles won't atrophy. NMXXXY is exactly right!
