Hi Moms !!!
Don't know if anyone noticed I've been gone for a while but I've sure missed everyone here and so happy to see so many new names :D
I get the emails into my box so I was aware but life was (and still is most of the time) just too overwhelming to come back over here. Thank you to those of you that sent me your prayers and well wishes for my family. Over the past 2 months 3 out of 4 of my parents and parents-in-law have had surgerys. In addition to me being on disability- it just was too much. They are all recouping thank God and back home :)

I'm going to scan through some of the comments on here. That'll take some time. I hope I can start putting my life a little back in order so I can be on here on a more regular basis again. If I didn't respond to someone- PLEASE don't think I was being rude and please don't take it personally.
Talk to everyone soon ! Have a great night-
Paulette

Centhea, What a helpful and informative answer. I think you are right about their looking for an attitude change especially if they see a negative one. I know my son's active duty told us last year that they had seen such a change in maturity from 4th class to then in our son....so they are looking for it. That is there job to get you ready for the Navy. Sometimes I think the student "officers" might get a little carried away, though. :)

Cheryl, thank goodness she gave you a break last night! Hang in there.

thanks for the kind words, ladies....Cheryl, sometimes if the conversation is going poorly, it helps me to put a smile on my face while I talk to my daughter. I think she can "sense" my upbeat confidence in her....good luck!

Cheryl........good luck tonight with the phone call. It is so difficult all the adjustments these kids have to make their first year in college. Sometimes it does seem insurmountable.

NMXXXY.......yes, if you do continue with ROTC and then don't take your commission you have to pay back all the money you have received through the scholarship including your first year. If you pull out after Freshman year and are receiving scholarship money, you do not have to pay back that first year.

Cheryl, Keep encouraging your daughter ............if she can do well on the swim test and the running has improved......it will keep on improving. There is no way but "up"! It is difficult, I think, for 4th class because they are dealing with ROTC as well as all the other emotional changes that come with being in college that the other kids are dealing with. It's a rough ride.
Also, you might encourage her to stay as NMXXXY suggested after CORTRAMID and decide. As I understand it, even though they do sign on the dotted line at the beginning of their sophomore year, they are not really committed until they commission and sign on the dotted line then. My son's active duty told him that and I also called to the people over recruiting in Pensacola (if I remember correctly) and they said that was true. The Navy is not having the problems with recruiting that the other branches are and the officer I talked to said that is why "for now" they do not have to commission. My son agonized over this after his Freshman year, but he is glad he stayed.

cookiesml, Glad things went ok with your daughter at the nutritionist!

CherylwithaC, I feel for you. If you go back to my last post to you, I truly, truly feel your pain, as my daughter, too, has her biggest obstacle with the run. If you remember my story, last week she was sooo ready to quit. I heard the exact same things you are hearing. But, as the other moms have said, a little time a perspective really changes things. This week, she was in a much better mood. Just as with our lives, each and every day brings new hope. We just have to close the book on those bad days, and somehow we get through it. As I stated, failing the run and being unable to take the PFA because of a medical issue, the Lt. told her to see the nutrionist. Well, as much as that did not sit well with her and felt like a personal attack, she did go. The nutrionist basically signed off on her and said her eating habits and overall health were great. Thankfully, for now, this was enough for the Lt. With that hurdle over, she is feeling better. So you see, every day brings something new. If your daughter can just focus on getting through one day at a time....the run will improve as you stated, and like my daughter, she'll get used to the three-day PT. As big a pain as it is, it does keep them motivated to get going and stay focused---this improves everything, not just her Navy stuff. Good luck. As stated, as moms we can only pray and support them. Believeing in them really helps them to believe in themselves.....

S's has a "nurse option" also...and that's why more females. The female staff officer is new this year.

I'm sure you know better than I do about the support for females in ROTC, NMXXXY. My son's unit happens to have quite a few females in it especially the class that came after him and they actually have an "active duty" female officer as well. How insightful of your daughter to see the need for a support group and start one. Perhaps that might be a solution for Cookiesml's daughter.

Hi, All, I find these conversations so helpful and interesting even though my MID is a male. I remember at the beginning of his sophomore year he really struggled with whether to stay in ROTC. He was under scholarship as a freshman and knew that if he decided not to continue at that point, we would not have to pay the money back. It broke my heart to see him close to tears trying to decide and being so conflicted. We were on campus at that point and he went to talk to one of the active duty that he respected and trusted to be honest with him and not just try to keep him in. At that point, he decided to stay and as far as I know has not looked back......not that there haven't been exasperated phone calls home. He was XO of his unit first semester and I was truly amazed at what he knows about leadership and dealing with people. He was also having to deal with the CO (student) who was not doing such a great job.

Cookiesml, I will voice what is maybe a "no-no" on this site, but the Navy is not for everyone. You know best if your daughter is just being a "drama queen" but perhaps she, too, should go talk with her advisor about how she is feeling. If this has been going on for two years, it seems that it would be important to do that. I don't think it is unusual for them to feel like it is taking up their whole college life.......I have heard that as well, but her feelings of "no support" concern me. I have been very impressed with the concern and support of the active duty in my son's unit. He has a lot of respect for them. His is a small unit and maybe that makes a difference, but it would not hurt for her to do that. Good luck with all this.
