It was just a political opinion and call to action. I realize people are passionate about many things but this isn't the place for political dialogue. So ladies... I'm old Navy mom and I just reacted like an old Navy mom. Hopefully she (if indeed she was who she said she was) wasn't too insulted. I just feel strongly about the mission of this site. - Mom of NROTC graduate of UW and SU class of '97

Ahh... that's better. Just moms and friends commiserating. Navy for moms should just be a nice place for trading stories and getting together.

Hi there NROTC moms. I've been reading back through recent posts. My heart goes out to all of you. The first year is a real eye opener for these kids. My son was Class of 97, people always say how lucky that he had his college paid for... well he earned it. Every drill, every class, every meeting, every night watch. My son's class lost over half of the class by the end. Lot's of gear was turned back in after Christmas break and many chose not to sign on the line for their Sophomore year but those who pursued their dream...the reward is there. Have you seen the new Navy ad on TV? If not, catch it on the Navy.mil site. Have a tissue handy...

Hi MizzouMom
My daughter mentioned that the Navy was moving towards women on subs also. I am not too sure about the idea myself, women and men on subs for extended periods of time, I just don't know. I know she is not too thrilled with the idea because she is graduating in a couple of years and nervous about how they will fill the positions on the subs for women, will it be an order or choice?

Wow, Barb ~ I'm glad to hear that your daughter is doing well and wants to keep her ROTC scholarship. How wonderful that you were able to attend Parent Weekend at SD and enjoy an air show. I love watching the Blue Angels perform.

Hi all,

NavyMomXXXY I so get your approach to child rearing, even of young adult children! IMO you are dead-on when you say in your post:

"rewards to effort. College is their job, and it is tough - that's why over 1/3 of college freshman never make it past their first year, and why only 50% of NROTC midshipmen actually commission."

It's not easy sometimes helping them to stay focused but they do appreciate it later on and we don't have a thirty-eight year old "child" still living at home depending on us to take care of them.

Your LTJG being able to attend the Navy Birthday Ball in Tokyo is one of the many rewards tangible rewards and there are many some of them intangible but important nonetheless.

One last thing --IMO all parents whose children have chosen the path less traveled can give themselves a pat on the back for raising such courageous young men and women.

Hi, I had some sad news from my daughter last night and would just like to get some prayer going. My daughter attends Fordham University in New York and one of the freshman at her other campus Suny Maritime was apparently working on his car and was crushed by it when it fell on him. Please lets keep this young man's family, friends and unit in our prayers.
