Also received this from Ombudsman:

Dear Friends and Families of the USS CURTIS WILBUR

The ship is currently assisting in the Earthquake and Tsunami Relief
efforts near Sendai. You can be proud of your sailor as they assist our
host nation in this time of tragedy. You can also take comfort in
knowing that they are out of harms way from the power plant as well.

The time needed for this massive relief effort is uncertain but email is
still available for the most part when they are not on duty or sleeping.
Needless to say, the ship will not be home as scheduled. What your
sailor needs though is your support. If you do need assistance at this
time please let me know and I will be happy to assist you. This will
give you sailor ease and comfort so they can do their job effectively.

I will continue to keep you updated as events change and progress.

Respectfully,
Vicki Boehler

My son wrote:

The 8.9 we had was the 5th biggest earthquake ever recorded to hit land in history. Im aware of the over 1000 deaths, ive heard phone service and possibly internet is down in japan. Ive tried to check the status stuff on my facebook but it crashes sometimes cause they use an older internet explorer version on
the ship. Im glad theres a lot of support since me and the Curtis Wilbur
are supporters right now aswell because we are being sent to aid in the
disaster relief efforts currently. We wont be back in port Monday, no
idea when we will be back all I know is that we are going to help with
the relief efforts. I will do my best to keep you updated tho. Let
everyone know that we are safe and doing our best in aiding our host
nations people with these hard times. Also japan has dropped prices to
help people be able to afford things they need in these times which
means our dollar is currently worth a lot more here now. Anyways ill
write when I can ttys love you

USS Curtis Wilbur is currently off the Boso Peninsula, preparing to go to Miyagi. That is the epicenter of the earthquake. The will be helping with search & rescue and relief efforts. Our folks are headed to the worst hit area and more than 10,000 people from the area cannot be located.
