Ang - I would like to know more about the g-mail acct going to his phone, etc.  That sounds like what we need to do.

Mary Ellen - is BMSN the same as what my son does?

Thanks to you all - I'm starting to feel better already!  :)

jansu- My son is also a BMSN on the Curtis Wilbur.  Loves his jobs, as varied as they are- everything for steering that puppy in the open seas to scraping paint when they are in dry dock.  Have your son look for Nick Fox when he gets settled.

Thanks to you both for the info.  He is on the plane now and off to his new adventure.  I am very sad and can't imagine going months and months without seeing him but I know this is a great thing for him.  As soon as he figures out about getting a phone and we learn how to communicate, I will be better.  I told him to turn off the phone on the international flight.  Hope he remembers!

He is a Boatswains Mate (BM) - whatever that means - LOL.

Hey everyone - Happy Valentine's Day!!!  My sailor is leaving this week for Yokosuka and the Curtis Wilbur.  Can you tell me what he absolutely needs to take, what not to take, and any ideas how much room he will have for stuff?  What  about civies, etc.  Any info would be great!

willoSailorMom - Thank you for your reply and encouragement.  It's good to know about sending packages.  My best guess is that he will find his way once he gets there.  He has already been in contact with his sponsor and so I'm pretty calm so far.  My biggest angst is communication.  I'm not sure about his phone and how we will be able to talk, e-mail, text, etc.  Also if you can think of anything specific that he really needs to take initially, that would be helpful.

Tango has been a great app for calling without charges. It gives my sailor a local number and it has video too!
