My son is in SD also,he's ben ther since April, he wants his car.I understand its a piece of home & he's tired of walking or taking the bus or bumming rides with others if ther's room in the car.But if we take him the car is going to B used as a taxi cab? He was a responsible person at home but I am a little concerned at all the drinking that some of them do.(any thoughts)?

My son ended up getting a car and so far so good:-) My daughter graduated from high school and we're having her grad party this weekend....wishing he could be here, but we knew when he joined he would likely be missing big events...but we still wish he was here!

Hi lynniemarie, I'm not sure of what you should all expect but typically unless your daughter is married she will stay on base in the barracks throughout her C School. Then after C School depending on her orders she will probably be stationed to a ship, but also depending on her rank she will either stay on ship or she will be able to stay somewhere out in town.

Hi Moms! We are new to the Navy... and our daughter is headed to SD to work with a new Helo squadron.

What can we expect??? Do they live on base when they're in C School?? I have no clue and need the 411 on it!! Many thanks!

My son just bought a motorcycle and loves it, he's been in SD for 6mos now, got tired of bumming rides with everyone. Got a loan to buy his bike off a buddy who is also a sailor. Tell your son to keep his ears open for anyone selling due to a deployment. Happens alot! It's easy to get a motorcycle license there, two day course on base and then he can go to the DMV.  The downfall is registering any vehicle in Cali is pricey. So tell your sailors to save money for the tags and titles!

Diana - Our son doesn't have one either and says he needs one to get around. He says it's 30-45 minutes to walk where he needs to go. I wish we were closer to help look, etc. He's young....but says there's guys who know cars:-)

We are moving to SD tomorrow, actually, and bringing BOTH our cars...I really can't imagine my husband or I without our cars...considering I will be working in La Jolla and he will be at the 32nd st base downtown....I think we will be doing a lot of commuting....and it sounds like a lot of people live a little ways out from the base, so if you are living off base I would say definitely, but I don't know about single Sailors stationed there, I think they live on base so it might be a diff story.

My son is in San Diego and says it is really hard to get around with out a car, he doesn't have one so he complains about it everyday.

How common is it to have a vehicle while in San Diego? Necessary?
