Oh gosh there's so much to do out here!  Well first there's the beaches:  Coronado has some of my favorite beaches, and its also a great place to visit, see the Hotel del, shop around town;  Ocean Beach is an awesome area, with great restaurants (Hodad's, South Beach, PIzza Port to name a few!) and shops, and a great beach;  Pacific Beach and Mission are just north of OB, Mission has a boardwalk-type area with a roller coaster and numerous shops, and PB has a nice pier (OB has a pier too);  La Jolla is a great area, with La Jolla Shores being the main beach and then there's La Jolla Cove which is just as pretty, and Children's Pool is another beach where you can see seals hauled out.  The La Jolla area is full of restaurants and shops as well!  And then there's always Sea World, San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park (the park in itself has several museums and beautiful gardens), and Birch Aquarium in La Jolla.  Downtown Gaslamp District is also fun to visit, great nightlife and also nice restaurants during the day....Hillcrest is a fun, funky area that is very open and diverse....Seaport Village is close to downtown that's a great little shopping area on the waterfront....and there's of course the two main malls in Mission Valley - the Misson Valley mall and the Fashion Valley mall.  Point Loma is also a great area, and at the very end is the Cabrillo Nat'nl Monument with outstanding views of the entire city!  Whew....just let me know or shoot me a message if anyone wants any more details about anything!! There's lots more too, but that's a good start!!

Thanks for the advice! I have the same question as chopsmom. Where do you recommend we visit? I'm sure our Sailor has some ideas too. Some family went last summer and purchased a gold card that they felt was a great deal. Anyone heard of that? I'll ask them too, but curious what others thought.

I'm planning a trip there, too.  What do you recommend we see?  (Besides our sailor!!)

Definitely get the car...i have visited my sailor there, and depending on where you are going to stay, a car is better than the transit- which is not bad just in and around the city. Plus if you have never been there, you are going to want to site seeing- there is so much to see and you need more than transit to do that.

Hmmm....I have used the trolley a few times, like on New Years Eve or to get to a Charger's game, but each time it took a long time to get anywhere...depending on where you are going, you could make it work, but in SD things are pretty spread out....If it was me, I would definitely get a car!

Comment by MidwestNavyMom on February 1, 2013 at 10:55pm

We will be coming to SD. My husband is wondering if we could use public transportation/taxis instead of getting a car?? Thoughts?? We've never been there. My guess is it would be tough without a car, but thought I'd ask. Can't wait!!!!!

So my husband got sent to North Island for "C" school well turns out they dont have school/classes there and they arent sure why hes there. lmfao his orders specifically say north island, CA and they read the orders and said umm your supposed to be here but we arent sure why! He has to stay there til his "time" is up there and then moving onto his final duty staion in China Lake.. so what the heck is he supposed to do until then!! they have him staying at the gateway inn.. seriously lol crazyness

Bittersweet moment...my daughter has left to return to her duty station. :( So glad to have spent this time with her. So different now that she no longer lives here. She spent more time with us than I thought. I knew she would want to visit with friends but not so much. Amazed at how much she has grown up in less than a year. I'm very proud. Now I need to plan a trip out to see her.
