Hey guys! We plan on visiting my son in San Diego this Summer. I really need advice on where to stay and any discounts we can get through him (if any). I have heard that we may can stay at the Navy Lodge... is this true? Has anyone ever stayed there from the group? How do we go about getting rooms? Also, we would like to visit Sea World or Disney. Do you know of military discount tickets? He is new to the base and we have never visited him before so we are completely in the dark. Any and all help, suggestions, and advice are welcome!
Hello, I'm planning a trip to San Diego in July. Any suggestions or recommendations. My young day and my Sailors gf will be accompaning me. We hope for alot of beach time while our Sailor is in school. Thanks for the ongoing support this site brings. God Bless!
crit2015. Have your sailor book a room/s at the Navy Lodge on Coronado Island. It's beautiful and right on the beach. We just got back a week ago from seeing our son come back on the Vinson after a 10 month deployment. We didn't stay at the Lodge but we went there for a party the FRG put on and I was very impressed at not only the location but just how beautiful it is! Visit Sea Port Village. Lots of shops and restaurants over looking the water and you can see the ships from there. If you've got a car and have time there is a brewery called Stones that has tours [have to book in advance] and it's got an awesome garden to sit out in and the food is outstanding! Hope that helps.
Thank you lori :)
We were just there in May. The Coronado Brewing Company restaurant on Coronado Island was good. I love historic hotels so we walked around the Hotel Del Coronado.
There are over 60 craft breweries in the San Diego area. That is what my son wanted to do one day. If you like wine tasting, we spent a day in Temecula Valley. About 1 1/2 from San Diego.
We went to the gaslamp district for dinner at La Puerta. They had great food and frozen mojitos.
We also spent a few hours at Seaport Village.
We had been to San Diego before so we didn't go to Sea World, San Diego Zoo or Lego land this trip. The San Diego zoo was the most beautiful zoo I have ever seen. Beautiful plants and flowers.
My favorite day was the family cruise on my son's ship. Very cool experience before they left.
Doreen like you we had been to SD before. When our son came back from his first deployment we went to the zoo and it was indeed a very beautiful zoo. Expensive but at least they do give a bit of a military discount. We went to that Mexican restaurant and the margarita's are also very good! You're right the food was great! Huge portions. So many things to do really in SD. I had no idea there were that many breweries there!
Navy Lodge Coronado is booked through September.
I have a flight booked for July 24th - Aug 2nd and having a heck of a time finding a reasonable hotel during those dates. Navy Lodge on base will not allow children under 12 unless 1st floor room and of course- none available :(
I pray that there becomes an availability at Navy Lodge Coronado- it would eliminate having to rent a car.
I am so sorry to hear that they are booked up. I wonder if they would move someone to a higher floor so that you could have a first floor room? Have you done any Google searches for reasonable hotels? Where we stayed was in Hotel Circle in Mission Valley. It wouldn't be very convenient for you as you would have to rent a car and the traffic can be terrible. We stayed off the base because our son has a house near MV.
I will go on my FB site that is for the Carl Vinson navy moms [the carrier my son is on] and ask for suggestions for you. Many moms and their families that were there when our sailors came back stayed in the area. Someone might have some suggestions for you.
Thank you! I greatly appreciate any suggestions or recommendations!!
As this is a Cali trip on a budget- I have to keep within my means. Most importantly time with my son!! I'll have my 7 year old daughter accompanying us- she just wants to play on the Beach!!
I've googled everything I can think of... with not being familiar with San Diego. And its HUGE!! Navy is expecting two aircraft carriers and two ships to arrive this summer. I call Navy Lodge Coronado every day (twice a day) in hopes for something to become available...
Prayers and Good Vibes appreciated!!
crit2015- I've had several moms respond to my post of places in SD that they used.
New Holiday Inn Express off of I 8 it's in Hotel Circle which is about 20 min away.
Old Town Inn.
North Island Navy Lodge
La Quinta also off of I 8. The mom said it was fairly cheap and the rooms were clean but the parking wasn't very good.
I'll let you know the more I hear from the moms. At least you can look at these and see what they offer. Have you tried the North Island Navy Lodge?
We stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt....we booked way in advance so we got a good price....
It was really nice.
Hi! Does anyone know if parents are allowed to see the ships off for deployment or welcome them back? I would really like to do both when the time comes.
