Vickie, when my husband was deployed we kept his phone on our regular plan (Sprint). We didn't change to an international plan or anything. We have unlimited data and Wi-Fi so that helps. Anywhere he was able to connect to Wi-Fi when he was in port we were able to talk without any additional charges on our plan through FaceTime and FaceTime voice calls (internet calling) on our original plan. As for the computer, it is the same thing. When he can connect to a Wi-Fi signal in port he can Skype you from his computer. Communication on board the ship while they are at sea and not in port is pretty limited to Facebook chat and emails and a rare phone call because the lines for the phones are AWFUL (although my husband was able to use the phone in his department's office yo call for special occasions when they weren't in port, like before I was going in for a surgery and for our anniversary). Hope that helps!

I've asked several moms and I am trying to figure out all the options about phones and deployment.. Should we get an "interntional plan" on his existing phone or should he get a "pay as you go" phone...If he takes his phone, what should he turn off so we don't get all kinds of charges?  If he uses the ship's phones, do they have access to it often?  Should he take his computer on the ship?  I have so many questions about how we will communicate while he is gone and how we should pay...

Hello everyone.  My son has been stationed in San Diego since December 30th.  Prior to leaving for San Diego, my father died unexpectedly & his memorial was 3 days prior to my son leaving to go to his station.  He's been in San Diego 6 months, learning San Diego since he's from SC but he's been in Chicago for months.  So he's learning more of the city life.  LOL.  He likes San Diego, & so will I since I'll be visiting him in 4 months.  Yay!  Thank you for letting me a part of this group.  :-)
