It is true... some bases only allow indoor pictures. Of course no pictures when equipment is 'open' or being worked on. After PIR I wanted a picture of the Great Lake sign... so I walked over to closer to the gate to get the sign only... boy can the guys with the guns move quickly! They explained no pics of the gates were allowed. I showed them it was only the sign nothing else but they still had me delete the picture. Safety and security is taken very seriously!

Welcome Valley! It is easy to be overwhelmed! Just start small... look at others pages and use their ideas until you discover what you like and looks right to you! Remember the pages are to bring a smile of remembrance of the time and place to you and your family... There is no right and wrong!

Each and every one of you need to have your sailors take you for a tour of the closest NEX (Navy Exchange). They have great deals on all kinds of things and especially electronics! It is usually one of the first things that sailors discover with their paychecks! tehehehe

Those are great ideas! I also asked my son to take lots of pictures for me... I got pictures of his room and buddies... however he was the picture taker!!! Silly boy! Remind your sailor to have someone take pictures of him! That is what his mom really wants to see!

There is no time in boot camp for pictures. Once bootcamp begins they will break them down pretty hard. Lots of physical tests and little sleep to begin. The days are really full learning how to do things the navy way. From physical fitness, to folding and stowing your clothes. Then there is ironing, cleaning, more cleaning and more physical fitness. They are not allowed anything like a camera. You will receive in a box everything your son goes to boot camp with. His Ipod, phone, watch, pants, shirt, underwear, socks, shoes, etc... There is a list of what they are allowed to take. Have you been on the boot camp web site?

The good news is there will be an official photographer that takes their division picture and their individual pictures. They also take pictures for the 'yearbook' called 'The Keel". They put one together for each graduating class. Your sailor can order a copy of the Keel when they have pictures taken. It will contain pictures of their sleeping quarters, induction, uniform fittings, swim test, cleaning the head (bathroom), mailcall, etc. The pictures are of all the divisions that are going through. My son is pictured in quite a few! I scanned those and put them in his scrapbook also!

Be sure to have your son order what pictures of him and his division and the keel he wants as they only print as many as they sell. He can also order a dvd of the PIR (Pass In Review-graduation) ceremony. All the pictures will arrive to your sailor shortly before PIR. His dvd of the ceremony is mailed home.
When you are on base check where you are allowed to take pictures. I got in big trouble taking a picture outdoors one time. Thank goodness it was digital and I only had to delete it.

Welcome Christine! First piece of scrapbooking advice... take lots and lots of pictures and save everything! By everything I mean ticket stubs, letters, cards, notes from his DEP classes and more! My sons know to bring those items home and I have a little box on my scrapbooking desk that they just toss them into.
Pictures to take... your son swearing in when he does his final enlistment... picture with his recruiter... In front of the house before he leaves... the box of his clothes and personal items when it is shipped home from boot camp... and of course PIR (Pass In Review-bootcamp graduation) is just one picture taking moment after another! Take a look through some of the pages that are posted above to see what some of the really talented moms from this group have put together.
Then your fun starts... putting together your book!

I love the dollar aisle at Michaels! Always something new and fun! My nieces (ages 2 and 3 and 6) love to come over and I can afford to let them scrap with me to their hearts content this way!

A great web site for military scraping supplies is 'scrap your trip'. They have awesome customer service and a great assortment of supplies. They will also design/find things if you ask!
