Can anyone tell me their thoughts on the rate in general and some of the locations my son might be stationed?

CE is a great job.  He will have skills that he can use in both the Military and civilian world.  He can be stationed at ANY military base in the world. Save your money and get ready to travel to see him. :)  Welcome to the Bees.

Well thanks for the welcome and the info. We are very excited for him and will definitely travel to see him. He is up for the adventure and wants to be stationed overseas. Looking forward to the next few years and making connections with other Bee folks!!

You're welcome.  Mine (a BU) is stationed in Sigonella Italy.  Saving my pennies for a trip to see him.

Wow!!! Italy sounds great!!! Do they tend to move often or stay put for a long time?

I'm not sure I think it has a lot to do with what they will be doing and what group they are attached to.  Mine will be there for 3 years.  That is a lot of holidays to be missing my son!  Thank God for Skype!!!

You're right, that is a long time. Hopefully he enjoys it there and you will be able to see him soon. Technology can be a wonderful thing. Used to be people had to rely on snail mail only. I can't even imagine!

When Hubbs and I were newly-weds he was in the Navy.  No Cell, No Skype, Internet in it's infancy (late 80's- 90's).  We survived 2 Wes-Pac's in 2 years. Snail mail and overseas collect calls at random times in the middle of the night.  It was hard.  He got home 2 weeks before our first was born and left again a month before her first birthday.  He hated missing out on our lives so he got out but I think sometimes he misses the Navy especially now that one of our kids is in.

It's really amazing how resilient our relationships can be when put to the test. The immediacy of today's world seems to be a blessing and a curse sometimes. My son is so happy about his decision to join and securing a Seabee rate. He's helpful, loves to travel and has an adventurous spirit. I'm beginning to think that this is the beginning of something great for him. Husband and I both get fairly good vacation time so hopefully we can visit him. Funny, it's really hard to imagine not seeing him for months/years at a time. The reality of it just hasn't sunk in. I guess it will with time.
