Hi ya'll,

I'm new to this and not sure where to start.  My daughter PIR 3/25/11 and is in Gulfport now (BU).  She said she is on hold for a month.  Is this normal?  She asked me to send her some things too: computer & personal stuff.  She already has her phone.  Would it be better to send it to her or meet/drop off?  We still have family & friends in Georgia so it won't be to far to meet.  I don't want to get her in trouble.  Thank you

Stephanie

Hi, Stephanie-- My daughter was also on hold for about a month when she first got to Gulfport. I sent her phone, laptop, and some personal items to her as soon as she had her new address. Sent the box via UPS next day service and she received it right away. The second box I had sent to her a week or two after she "classed up", and it got to her just about as quick, I think it was two days after I had sent it. Others have sent packages via overnight delivery, and did not have the same experience (e.g., receipt by their sailor a few days later or even up to a week later).

If you are close to the base it might be just as easy to see her in person with her personal items. You would have to arrange it with her ahead of time for her to meet you at the entrance in order to escort you on base, I believe. ;o)
Also, while she is "on hold" she will still have things to do... PT, basic classes (like how to handle her finances, etc.), watch duty....

Hi Stephanie and welcome to the group.  Yes being on hold is NOT out of the norm.  She may start sooner than a month.  It just depends on how fast everyone gets there to join her class.  I am not sure about meeting her to drop things off because she has to phase up in order to be able to leave base.  It was too far for me to take items to my son so I had to rely on the post office.  Because she is on hold, it may take a little bit for her to receive her mail and they do have some funny post office hours (according to my son).  Just make sure to tell her when you sent the packages so she can start to check the post office about 3 days later.  My sons belongings were coming from MI and would take 4 days to get there.  I hope this helps.  Don't be afraid to ask more questions.

Thank you both so much for the information.  I really appreciate the help.  I talked to her tonight & she gave me her address.  She won't phase up for 2 weeks.  We're in WV so I'll send what she needs since it takes awhile for things to get there.  It soulds like she is settling in.   :0)

In the states, I have found Fedex has been better, costs is a little more but you have a tracking number.

I sent a package to my son USP while in Afghanistan took 3 months....

Hey Stephanie,

Welcome!  Youve got good info so far.  Everyone is right. My son was there last year he is a BU also. Yes you can send her stuff and yes you can deliver it also.  She will need to come to the gate on Pass Road to "sponser" you on base.  She will be able to go all over base with you just cant leave base til she classes up like said before.  But theres stuff to do on base-the Nex, Seabee store and Museum etc...If you plan on staying a few days you may want to check out Navy Lodge as its on base too.

Bee safe!

Joyce

Thank you so much for all the info.  Everyone has been great !!!.  Hopefully by the time she gets to her duty station, I'll have this down pat.  Grandma is going to take her stuff, so they can visit since she didn't get to go to graduation at Great Lakes. Already checked, just need dates.  We'll all get together when she gets her leave.  Can't wait !!!
