Hello, My husband will PIR from boot camp on 3/18/11. He will then go to Gulfport for A school. He will be a BU in the Seabees. He asked me in a letter if I could find some information for him about A school. Does anyone know what the rules are for liberty? Can I visit him there? Can he take his car? What should he expect at A school? Currently he is on Ship Staff at Great Lakes and he has heard rumors that that job could give him extra privileges at A school. I don't understand how that could be, but does anyone know if that is true? Any info would be great!!!

Sarah,

I had a lot of questions too and was getting a lot of different answers so I just got off the phone with my son's recruiter. I got the answers to my questions. I would suggest doing that. My son will be going to A school in Gulfport as a BU also PIR 3/11/11.

OK - I hope I can help.  My son graduated A school Oct 2010 (BU in Gulfport).  They will have to "Phase up" to get permission to leave base.  They will learn this once they get there.  But don't worry, it doesn't take long for them to do it. My son was in class during the day and could do pretty much anything at night as long as he complied with the "Phasing" rules.  As for the visiting, I am not sure about during A school, but I went for A school graduation.  It was wonderful.  I am sure you have heard all the excitement of PIR - which is amazing.  A school graduation, to me, was better because there were only 11 in the class.  So it wasn't as long, it was more personal and I got to be in the front row to watch and take pictures.  Plus we left base together right away.

They can have their vechiles there, but it is a matter of getting them there or buying one there (my son drove when he came home after A school graduation).  Make sure they get their cells ASAP when they get there (if they are not grad & go) so they can call you.  I got a call every night which was so nice as not hearing from him after 2 months.

I can always ask my son more questions if I have not answered what you need.  If you do want more information, please PM me.  I will help in any way possible.

My son is graduating  basic 3/11 - and also going to Gulfport to be a BU - From what I understand they get liberty only if they request it and get approval. They can have cells, computers, or any of their personal belongings their quarters area sort of set up like a college dorm - two seperate "bedrooms" with a common room, so they have their "own space".  It will be nice to hear from our Sailors more frequently than we have in the last 8 weeks!
Thank you all so much for the information. This Navy adventure is exciting but yet very scarey. It is nice to have help from people who have been there done that and that are going through what I'm going through. It's nice to know my family and I are not alone.
Have you ladies gotten more answers for your questions?  I hear the weather is great there now.  When I say that you have to know I am in Michigan, so almost anything would be great for me.  Please don't hesitate to ask more questions if need be.  My son is in battalion NMCB7.  So if any of yours get assiged to them, please let me know.  I would love to connect with more families from that battalion so we can keep in touch when they deploy.
