Very sad to have to join this group, but I am glad that it is here.  I have been able to get lots of information and appreciate the support.

Our story- In Jan 2011 Our son applied for the Air force- answered yes on the application for a case of childhood eczema (dermotologist at MEPs and Family Dr. said he didn't have eczema anymore).  It took 9 months after applying for medical waiver for AF to say No.  Ok.  AF Recruiter said to try Navy- Applied for Navy with full disclosure of original application.  Was accepted into Navy MEPs left for Bootcamp June 12, 2012.  We were so excited that things were finally going forward after 18 months of waiting!  Got the phone call from my son on June 19, 2012 one week after he left.

He told me that he was being medically seperated for a bone fragment on his left knee.  It was discovered during a stretch and he was sent to medical for an x-ray where they discovered the bone fragment and said that he would require surgery.  Of course he was told that he could come home, have the surgery, reapply for Navy in 6 months in which he would have to get a medical waiver from the MEPs and then the Navy Dr would have to approve that waiver if/when he got to bootcamp.  I have little faith that he has a chance of getting a waiver, so his dreams and our dreams for him in the military have gone up in smoke.

I will say that I have great faith in God, who knew all about this before it even happened and that He has a plan for our son in all this.  That I know that I can trust in the sovereignty of God is what gives me comfort.  All this comes with many tears in the last 5 days.  Thanks for listening to our story.

Deanna, I am so sorry for you and your son. I received a similar call friday (the day I also got the PIR letter. My daughter is being medically separated for back issues, which she has never experienced before. My heart breaks for her .. Especially since she sounded like her spirit and resolve are broken. Hang in there ... If you need an "ear" Im here learning about this process too.

Breezyzmom ~ I understand what you mean when you say your heart breaks for your daughter.  We are feeling the same way.  I am so sorry.  I am a Christian and it is so hard to understand God's plan in all this.  In fact my feelings go the range of sadness, heartbreak, disbelief, anger back to being encouraged and hopeful for the future and then back to sadness.  We found out 6 days ago and the pain is still fresh.  I have stopped crying all the time, so that is a good sign!  Our family and friends have been a huge encouragement to us, but sometimes those same people say things that mean well and it just falls flat or feels like a slap in the face.  I am here to listen to you.  Our son took 5 days to outprocess, and now he is just waiting for the Captain to sign off on his papers.  I stayed home from our youth group's missions trip (my husband and I are leaders) so that I would be home for our son, so  now I just sit and wait.

My son has called about every other day.  Is your daughter going to appeal?  How did they discover her back problems.  I will keep you and your daughter in my prayers- I know this is so hard.
