We, too, got a phone call today. Or should I say his dad got a call...I was at work. Apparently they were allowed some free time to get personal stuff done and that allowed him an opportunity to visit the Navey Exchange where he made the call home (and a subsequent call to his girlfriend).

Said the entire division is doing great and they are jelling as a group. The RDCs are more mentors than they are the hard a** drill Instructors they were in the beginning. Derek got to be the PO in-charge for Marlinspike and said it went well. Said he's gotten to know RS Henderson quite well, but didn't realize he's headed to Meridian after BC. Said they are winning everthing and have earned the Drill & Marksmanship flags, too.

Mentioned next week includes the gas chamber and fire fighting. He also said the "I'm a Sailor" call will occur on 8/26, but wasn't specific about the time of day we should expect that call.

Apparently most everyone has a cold, and they all got more shots today. He still hates the weather. Said 88 feels like 105, and nothing like the Las Vegas 105's he used to.

He really wanted the USS Constitution job, but it was only offered to recruits 5'10" and above. Derek is 5'8". Oh, well...

Sounds like Div 289 is a great group of young men. Hope you all are as elated as we are right now.

Yes, I got a phone call today too, it was so wonderful to hear my son's voice!!! He said Battlestations will be on Aug 25th, so to expect the I am a Sailor call the 26th or 27th. He said it is firefighting all week and Captain's Cup on Sat. the 21st. He sent the same sentiments, excited to see everyone and misses us but sounded good. His 3 year old brother had picked up the phone and spoke for just a minute and asked if he was still on the airplane! Of course that is the last place he saw his big brother, too funny. Have a great weekend I hope everybody else got calls today too, it sure made my day!

Hey jhenderson congrats on school starting that is a little break and a new routine for you. My older son starts school on Monday. I got a letter but it was very short. He said that some of them have made "priscal" which means prison calenders and he is marking off the days until he gets to see our smiling faces. Which is kind of funny to me because the rest of the letter he talks about how fast time is going and how busy they are. Also, how healthy he feels going to bed and have 3 square meals, before he left he lived like a true teenager! I know he is anxious for BC to be done. He also talked about another phone call, but wasn't specific so I will be awaiting that! Hope you guys have a great day smiles and hugs to all.

It's kind of funny how we anxiously await mail delivery every day. No letter today, but I heard from my sister that she got a letter. We couldn't be more proud to know that he's staying in touch with those who have written to him.

He wrote her similar generalities...the military has an effective agenda...BC is intense, but not as bad as portrayed...he's made a ton of friends...looking forward to the firing range in the morning (letter was written 8/2)...lots of marching...hates the midwest weather especially when wearing smoldering hot gear. All that aside, he told her it's been pretty cool.

She must have asked him something about a postcard because he commented that they aren't allowed regular trips to the Navy Exchange. I didn't even know there was an Exchange, so that we news.

He closed with "only 4 weeks to go" so we know our recruits are counting down just like all of us are!

I wish I could add more. Our letters haven't disclosed much of anything...oh, he has described how he's adjusted to Boot Camp, has passed this and that, etc. Said their division has only a few bad apples, but that just means they get more PT. Appreciated reading that he can sees the glass half full no matter what. I've learned much more by reading what all of you have posted.

Our son is going to Meridian, MS, too. I think I read at least one other blogger's son/husband is headed there after BC. How great to see a familiar face when they start their next adventure!
