Mary n Jesse--no matter how belittling they think their job is, they are all equally as important. One couldn't work without the other. The Navy would not run without all of them working hard at what they do. Sometimes we just have to remind our sailors of this and besides as a bodily function we all have, tell him it's job security! lol

(this story is meant to be funny...yet just a little sad...)
So, Jesse is a Snipe. He wears a "Snipes run the Navy" hat.
When he gets to Japan, and guys ask him what his job is, and he says "HT" (Hull Tech), he says that they laugh...
I asked him why. He says "Mom, I am a sh&*t chaser!!
I said, "Jesse, you do welding and firefighting and plumbing, right?"
He said, "Mom, I make sure the sh*&t gets of the ship!
He said that if a sailor comes back to the ship drunk and wets his pants and tries to flush em to hide em, he would have to "unclog" And...if he ever sees anyone smuggling soft TP onto the ship he must confiscate it immediately!
Oh my poor little snipe :)

Hopefully things will get better for your son soon. Of course, the Essex sailors were granted 2 leave periods - one over Christmas and the other over New Years - the first all year. So, once he starts meeting his fellow sailors, some will be leaving. Of course, he will have time to settle into the ship before they head out in 2011.

Jesse made it to Japan on December 1st. He will stay on base until the ship returns (couple of weeks). He is really really depressed. He's on hold so he has nothing to do except think about how long it will be before he sees us again. It's taking all I have to keep him thinking positively. Hope it gets better when he meets people and makes new friends.

Mary - Jesse will be fine. My Katie traveled by herself Aprili 09 to Sasebo and has been serving on the Essex since that time. Katie is a DCFN.

Thanks, Rhonda. I think he is all packed now. We head to the airport about 4am tomorrow. Sure is going to take a long time to get to Sasebo! With the time difference it'll be almost 2 days for him from departure to arrival!

Hi Rhonda,
The holiday was quite different without our sailor at home, but we made it through. We did find out he put a post on facebook that he was in Hawaii, so I know he is safe and close to SD.
Welcome Mary n Jesse! Best of luck to your Sailor!

Hi there, my son Jesse will be leaving for Sasebo tomorrow. He will be on the USS Essex, He is a HT (hull technician). Just wanted to say hello. It's going to be a hard couple of days, but I'm grateful for support from other Navy moms!

Karen---we are from the north and my son rubs the beautiful weather in all the time, he's always taking pictures and putting them up on facebook with snide remarks. LOL He will get a taste of snow when he comes home for Christmas though, I'll throw him in it, face first! Good luck to your son and I hope you had a wonderful holiday.
