Hi SoCal moms! My son will be heading your way next. Currently he is at the US Naval War College in Newport, RI., but he got word in March that he has been selected for command. Last week he learned that he will be doing his XO and CO tour in sunny San Diego. Exciting times! Now we are waiting for the O-5 promotion list to be released in May. That would complete the trifecta for sure.

Truly sad news... I'll keep them in my thoughts.

Hi fellow helomoms! Just noticed that some had posted recently. Here's my update: My son is currently deployed too. He left in May and I've had 4 emails from him. LOL I know he's really busy! This is part of his department head tour so he was the Safety and Training Officer when they left and he has now taken over the Operations Officer duties. Added to that he's working on his JPME and his Masters Degree from OU. He does check in with his wife and I get the important stuff from her. The squadron is moving from JAX to Norfolk when they return from cruise. My husband and I have volunteered for moving duty again. We arrived in JAX the night before the moving truck and assisted with the grandkids and the boxes. The fun never stops!

Well Carrol, I don't think I would worry too much at this point. He may be a little adrift right now but he'll right himself. As for the lack of communication, I can tell you that his training right now is really intense. There is a lot to learn, lot's of tests, lot's of flights which mean pre-flight briefs and prep work. Everything is flight school accelerated. We hardly heard from our son at all. And one thing about the drinking... it's illegal to consume alcohol within a certain time before they fly so it may sound like he is drinking a lot but really, the more he is flying the less he can drink so I wouldn't worry. You'll get a chance to gauge how he is doing when you see him. We only see our son a couple of times a year. We are in the Seattle area and in the last year they have lived in Virginia, California, and Florida. Currently he is stationed in Jacksonville. That has been the hard part, just the sheer amount of time he is gone. Between the going to sea, training, and his year IA in Afghanistan he is gone a lot. He was supposed to be at sea this Christmas but they delayed the deployment of the Truman so he and family are coming home for a visit this Christmas. So it's not a normal life your son has chosen.

Hi Southern California Moms of Helo Pilots! I'm from farther north but I've been lurking on your site for months and hope it's okay to join you. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of helo mom specific sites. I've been a helo mom for 12 years now so hopefully if something comes up and you need answers I can help.
