Hello and Welcome Again-
I know I'll have a lot of questions for you and I think our other Sonar moms will too! I'm posting in this "Discussion" format BECAUSE if we use the "COMMENTS" section, non of us receive an email when there is a post. I hope that makes sense....

Here's the question: My son arrived at his ship (USS Ramage DDG 61) in the Gulf on Nov 1st. It's his first duty station (Norfolk). He emailed me today and said he'd finished "Indoc". What does he do next and how long before he starts his Sonar job? Will be have to do 3 months of galley/watch duty before he can do his real job?
Thanks for all your help!!! :)

hi Melissa Willie just arrived in Norfolk Sat. so I have the same type of question as you so if you get any answers let me know
Indoc is just getting them used to how things run on the ship. Their individual FSA (working in the galley) will depend on the ship. Normally, they do their FSA in the first year on board. Until he starts FSA or after he finishes it if he does that directly, he will be working with his division doing his job as a Sonar Tech. He'll also be doing standard watch qualifications, and probably studying for ESWS (Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist) as well.

I hope that helps a little. I will try to answer any other questions you might have, my husband is an STG1 with 9.5 years in right now.

Marla:
Thanks for the info! Matt said he had indoc for the first month and then received his promotion from E3 to STG3 so he had petty officer indoc. I know he stands watch but hasn't had FSA yet.
How long does it take to get ESWS?
It all depends. Some people get it done in a month or two, and some take more than a year. Most (emphasis on most) ships require them to have it before they have been on board for 18 months. I think when my husband got his it took him about 4 months, but they were underway at the time.
